I hate to give this a negative review, but my instant emotional reaction to the ending (yes, the updated one present in the review patch!) is so overwhelmingly poor that I find myself earnestly annoyed at the thought of this narrative continuing into the post-game. Like everyone else says, the gameplay rocks, but jesus christ that ending.

In Hades 1, the in-universe reason Zagreus would continue to try and escape was simple and elegant: it's his job now. There, done. The narrative played out in exactly the way it had to, and the game continuing to be playable didn't hurt it at all—rather, it felt like it becoming his job was more of a happy coincidence than a purposeful, pre-planned idea that *had* to happen.

The opposite is true in Hades 2. The vibe I get is that the writers were *obsessed* with recapturing that simple elegance of the first game's in-universe justification for why the game can keep being played, to the point where it screwed over the narrative conclusion. I can imagine several different ways the game could keep being played, and yet the writers chose the worst one.

The player does not care for Chronos. We are told, repeatedly, over and over, that he is a monster that, unfortunately, must have his immortality stripped away and killed permanently. And, in the 35 runs it took me to complete the game, that belief was never challenged by anyone except Eris, the embodiment of Strife who loves it when things are awful for everyone else, and Chronos himself, the guy who has kidnapped your family.

Yet, right when we're about to finish him off, there is a sudden proposition of, "Guys... what if he's just misunderstood?" As if it doesn't matter that the reason he was chopped up by the gods was that he ate all of his kids. And then it turns out, yes, he is just misunderstood! All he wanted was a family, aww. And of course, the best way to portray this to the player is through an ~2 minute montage where we see an alternate world in which he isn't a mass murderer of mortals and serial kidnapper! A world where, conveniently, we also don't see how Hades and everyone else forgives him for the crime of eating babies!

And then because there's a *chance* he was a good person in a different timeline and he feels bad for it, we should spare him. Power of family for the win! After that, he becomes our kooky, silly grandpa. How heart-warming!

The plot-twist of Death to Chronos being, "Death to the evil personality of Chronos" is so utterly jarring that I did not care to even pay attention during the credits, a remarkable feat considering Hades 1's "In the Blood" boat-ride through all the layers of the Underworld is up there as one of my favorite moments in gaming. Instead, I was looking online to confirm that, yes, most other people also despise this ending.

Part of what I loved about Chronos was how much of a bastard he was. After giving Mel a brief chance, he promptly switches to being the Worst Guy Ever, and that rules. He was mean, demeaning, sneering, believing himself above literally everything. That's gone when you roll credits. He simply becomes good after getting memories transplanted into him.

Imagine if that happened in Hades 1. Imagine if, instead of a very gradual change developed through dozens and dozens of runs, Hades behaved the exact same as he does when he berates Zagreus at the beginning until the moment Persephone came back to the Underworld, and suddenly he becomes a loving father without any of his past flaws! That is what they did with Chronos, except instead of an immortal, overworked, overprotective dad who acted in a flawed but understandable way, Chronos wants to kill the gods or something (they never make it quite clear what he wants, considering he didn't kill the Cthonic gods).

I can see a world where this idea of redeeming Chronos works. However, that world require altering the majority of dialogues with Chronos, tons of dialogue with other characters, and greatly expanding the post-narrative to include even *more* development for Chronos. Because as it is, the writers have thrown their hands up at actually writing *how* Chronos becomes better. Isn't it awesome how those transplanted memories solve the issue of actually getting people to like Chronos? And how his judgement in Olympus is entirely passed over as well? We don't need to show that to the audience, they already know that he was a good guy in an alternate timeline, that's good enough!

Instead of having to change all this dialogue and stuff to make the ending *salvagable*, they could've just taken the story in a different direction. Maybe follow through with "Death to Chronos"?

Although this review is largely about the ending, the post-game narrative is also really bizarre. I've only done a few runs (again, not much motivation to do so), and a lot of dialogue is... weird. Different characters keep saying the same phrases, "so that time can flow freely" and "the possibility of", which not only sounds really bad when every character says the exact same thing to refer to it, but it's also nonsensical. What does the possibility of Typhon or Chronos returning mean? Who knows! The game hasn't told me. I mentioned at the beginning that it seems the writers here were too wrapped up in creating a good in-universe reason for the game to continue, but they failed even at that while still sacrificing the climax of the story. (Also, really cool that we just don't get to see the House of Hades or Olympus anymore! That's so awesome! I don't care about those places anyway! Who would???????)

That was a very rambling review and contains maybe 1/3 of my thoughts on it. To reiterate, the gameplay is electric, but I cannot recommend this game when the ending and post-game make me so upset and annoyed that I don't really want to play more. If you need me, I'll be on Ao3 reading (or writing, if it doesn't exist) a fanfiction where Mel carries through with her task.

Hades II hooked me the same way the first game did. It feels familiar in all the right ways, yet there’s so much more to do - gathering, crafting, difficulty tweaks, side stories, even exploring the surface. The combat is smooth and fun, art is amazing, and the soundtrack still absolutely slaps. It’s everything I liked before, just ... more.
