The jack is a symbol of eternal misfortune. In poker, a pair of jacks is the fourth-best hand you can be dealt—a statistically strong hand, to be sure. It would be illogical to fold these jacks at the beginning of a runout. And yet, many poker players still fold this hand anyway because, even if the jacks are good, there's always a strong chance your opponent has something better. This is the curse of the jack: a fate where the unfortunate victim is forever doomed to a status of 'almost good enough.'
