I will preface this by saying that I, alongside many fans, grew up with the original game, so I had pretty high expectations and anticipation whenever the remake was announced.

There are many things that this remake got right and more. Capcom knew they had shoes to fill when deciding to develop this game, and I have to say they knocked it out of the park. The game (albeit my machine being on the weaker end) looks gorgeous. The characters. The weapons. The environments. The enemies. I could go on, but you get the idea.

The gameplay is nothing to sneeze at either. I remember all the times replaying the 2005 version, and while it does have its charm in playing through it again... does show its age in the controls department. Whereas in the remake everything flows well in terms of control. Menuing and inventory management feels much smoother. The responsiveness feels tight. I will say, however, the charm of the UI of the old game is missing here. Not to say that is a dealbreaker for me, but it added that bit of extra flavor older titles used to try out. Needles to say the UI in this game, while a bit minimal, does its job well!

Speaking of flavor, the soundtrack for this game is phenomenal. While some tracks like the original save room theme can't seem to be topped (you do have the option for the OG OST... but at a cost), there are certified hits, especially in the boss fight department. I will not spoil who for newcomers, but in the castle segments you will hear what I'm referring too.

The story and tone of the game I feel, personally, to be upgrades to the original. It does try to retain its cheesiness at times, but it sets forth with a more moodier and serious tone throughout the story. The stakes seem more serious in this game and you do feel more for characters like Luis and Ashley, whom, in my opinion, felt half-baked in RE4 2005. Leon still has his one liners, but has more sense of trauma from his RCPD days (more like a singular day rather). I will say in contrast, however, the main antagonists (save for one) took a backseat in this game. The goofiness of the back-and-forths between Leon and the villains in their radio chatter seemed to flesh them out more in RE4 2005. Meanwhile in the remake, the villains seem to lack in presence, especially the main antagonist, who like I said had his best moments saying witty remarks to Leon. One of the few nitpicks I have with this otherwise amazing game.

I do not know how else to sing my praises to this game.

I do not think my words can do this game justice (even if it is not perfect), but I highly recommend you try this game even if you are not the biggest fan of shooters or survival horror. There are spectacular moments to be had in this game that you will not regret!
