As others have mentioned, this is a great game, but has not much to do with Fallout. If I scored this as a Fallout game, I would say it's a disaster.

However- if you don't look at it as a Fallout game, it's actually quite awesome.

I'm saying that as someone whose first memorable game on a CD was Fallout 1 demo with Junktown back in the day... and who has played Fallout 2 approximately 20 times.

It is a refreshing change. This game is more like a shooter. Don't expect a strong story or role playing aspects. Look at it like a post-apocalyptic shooter with some fun crafting. That's all it is.

The gun play is amazing. One of the best I've ever seen. The guns feel great, they just feel "right", there's a lot of customization going on and you'll be checking every corpse to see if there's a better item.

On the other side, you might have a problem enjoying this due to the p*ss poor optimization. On my PC, it doesn't really matter if I play on the lowest, or the ultra settings. So I just play on ultra and have the same performance as if the game looked like a piece of horse turd.

The story and overall writing is quite bland at times and doesn't really drive you forward. I found myself just sprinting to the next city to see what happens there, ignoring the sidequests thrown at me.

When I first opened the PipBoy radio and tuned in to it, I found that they added some of the old songs from previous games- and quite frankly, it felt really weird- like it didn't belong. That's how different this game feels.

In conclusion- don't buy this if you expect a true Fallout game. Although, it has been quite obvious since Fallout 3 that Bethesda isn't planning to reproduce the Interplay/Black Isle formula. If you're up for some shooting and crafting, with some Fallout feeling sprinkled on top- I think it's well worth it on sale. But it's even less Fallout than Fallout 3- honestly, it feels a bit more like Borderlands to me, just a tad more realistic and added crafting- and unfortunately, missing a lot of the famous Fallout humour.

As for me- after the free weekend, I have decided to buy it. I realized that I just wanted more Fallout. And I'm glad that I did it. Maybe it's just nostalgia- but it feels good to be back.
