Wonderful little game! A love letter to the old PS2 days that still retains some niceties from modern games. The game is pretty well a more accessible entry to the survival horror genre. You have the option of gaining hints via an in-game system, a non-combat mode for people that just want to enjoy the story and aesthetic (or hard mode), and the ability to use both joysticks or an old-school D-pad type control scheme to play.

I am certain this game will scratch that itch for both newcomers and well-acquainted players of the genre and I highly recommend it.

The save dialogue sums it up rather well so far:
"Staring into the flames... I feel something. It's a curious mixture of hope and dread. Maybe everything will be okay, and maybe it won't."

Early Access Review
Love it, but hate it more now.

TL;DR Get it on sale, but not for VR. Terribly optimized for it. I'm not saying not to buy it, I've had fun, but I just don't like where the game has and hasn't gone. Over 4 years and so many things are still missing, bugged, certain exploits... The game should have had more meaningful development over that time period. That's just my opinion though and if you do buy it I do wholeheartedly hope you enjoy it despite its many deficiencies and issues. :)

I loved this game, and had a ton of fun moments with friends. Mostly due to bugs, smack-talking ghosts and immediately dying, or other similar things. Now recently I have been playing again and everything is for all intensive purposes the same as it was 4 years ago. There are still unfixed bugs from years ago. All the new ghost types don't really act all that different from any of the original dozen or so in my opinion.

GAMEPLAY
Gameplay as a whole revolves around going to a location and using different tools to collect evidence. You get all of your evidence, circle a ghost type in the book, and go home to do it all again. And again. And again. And again... In the good old days this wasn't so bad because the original lineup of ghosts seemed to be more different to eachother than all of them do now (save maybe the mimic, that POS, and the twins). Sure, they all have their own strengths and weaknesses that are unique, but for the most part they don't make that massive of a difference in the gameplay. They don't really add too much of a challenge over any other type because of those abilities either. Investigate... Circle a ghost... go home...
The gameplay seems more stale and boring than it did with half the ghosts there are now.

Unless you're faint of heart or don't do well with horror, I don't think there's very much scare factor or replayability in the game. They've not really done anything to help with that either I don't think. Hunts don't feel meaningful after you learn to avoid, or loop the ghost around an object or area to survive. Ghosts usually walk, but sometimes crawl to you during a hunt or an interaction at what seems like the same animation speed no matter their actual speed. Maybe have them do other things during a hunt? Maybe a different death than just getting choked out? Maybe at least change the hands reaching around you to the hands of the actual ghost model that has been assigned to the ghost instead of the exact same model every single time for the past 4 years. Add some variety. With the money they've made off of the game, surely that's not out of the question? (It is.)

Finally, cursed possessions. I don't think that things like the Ouija Board should break with low sanity. It was fun to keep asking stupid things and get killed for it. Bring back more spawns for them!

DESIGN
The design of the game visually and audibly was never too great, especially 4 years ago on release. The only kudos I give to them is some of the tool models look nicer than others (and I don't mean upgrades, I mean in regards to textures) and the skybox looks prettier now I think. Not that that matters much - you're almost never going to see it because you'll either be inside the whole time or too focused on investigating to look up in the first place. Also, some new ghost models and textures (not that they usually pop up long enough for you to get a good look in the first place). If you're going to make anything look pretty in the game, at least make it what everyone is actually going to be paying attention to.
The house? The player models that have looked ♥♥♥♥ and continue to look ♥♥♥♥ for the past 4 years?

There are numerous graphical glitches in regards to textures in the dark as well as shadows that have been there for more than a patch or two. Months. A few years for some.

On to audio
Audio I can't tear apart nearly as much as I could with everything visually. Sounds aren't the best but they are much better comparatively to textures and most models. I have no real complaints with ghost sounds, interaction sounds, or anything environmental. Except that droning fan sound or whatever you get as soon as you step into a building. That has never made sense to me, and I suspect that is in place to help disorient you listening for things to make it harder, or scarier maybe. Regardless, if you have been in a building and that's all you heard in real life... Indulge me. The only place I've ever been that has that droning is a factory because of all the ventilation inside. Not any residential building. Not an old, decrepit, abandoned building either. Those are just total. total silence almost all the time - but never that droning sound.
P.S. Is the grudge groan still a sound in the game? Only thing that makes me ♥♥♥♥ myself now.

MULTIPLAYER
While I cannot attest to the validity of hackers/trolls in the majority of public games, I can talk about playing with friends. ABSOLUTELY FUN! Much better with friends, that way you can sugarcoat over everything else in the game that is garbage with laughter and pranking your friends. Especially more fun if they are faint of heart or jump easily.

VOICE CHAT
Voice chat "works". What I mean is that, proximity (near to eachother) works almost all the time. Thankfully you can now alt+tab out of the game and not have it immediately break (they fixed something, after all...) now. Radio, or global voice though... It seems very hit and miss. This has been a bug for at least 2 or 3 years of me playing off and on, so its been around a while. Basically, radio voice will randomly not work for one or two people every other game or so. It constantly alternates between working flawlessly, and not working at all for someone. If you're lucky, you can usually still send your voice over radio, but won't hear anyone else's voice on the radio. Just the menacing radio beep and fizz between transmissions.

VR GAMEPLAY
VR is about the only way this game can scare me anymore. Aside from that grudge groan, but that doesn't seem to happen anymore. Unfortunately, VR is terrible with the game. Granted this is from experience just after the full release/game revision and not recent. The game runs terribly on VR, for a system that runs all but the most unoptimized VR games on high and ultra. God forbid I want to get even 90 frames on medium with this game. Maybe 50-60 if I'm lucky. That being said and doubling back to graphics, the game looks terrible in almost all avenues to begin with so maybe its not that big of a difference - or maybe it makes it worse because it makes the bad graphics somehow worse when the displays are 1/4 inch from your eyes.

VR interactions are pretty nice. For the larger interactions, anyways. Doors, drawers, cabinets, and lockers seem like they were made specially for VR. Grab and push, grab and pull, open it like real life! The radio you have an object to grab to speak through it. Unfortunately, that's where my praise ends for VR. Every other interaction is just like rebinding the mouse or keyboard to your touch controllers. There's nothing that really sets it apart for VR usage. The controls were alright enough, but the index is downright atrocious trying to hold your tools without dropping them. With toggle, sometimes I'll just accidentally squeeze too much again and toggle the drop. Other controllers, like the quest ones with a separate grip BUTTON are much better acquainted to the game's VR mode.

I think for now that is all I have to say about the game. It can be very fun, but I feel as though it has only gone downhill the past year or two in development. It's all stale with nothing meaningful added to the game that really aids in the replayability and especially scare factor. I feel as though after the game blew up, they took it upon themselves to add as many things as possible to look good even if there is minimal or no real change just to keep on raking in the money.

Edit: we won against the mandate, but not for all our global friends. No PSN mandate - re-list globally!

I recommend the game. It's a high-octane shooter that is typically very goofy when playing with friends. Arrowhead consistently updates the game with different patches and content for the players to enjoy too.

TL;DR
Pros:
High-Octane fun
Very silly and more fun with friends
Consistently updated with patches and new content\
Very stable game (except for arc weapons, which for some reason crash rarely despite having no usage spikes or performance drops)

Cons:
Inconsistent hit boxes and damage with certain AOE enemies (Titan & Spewers spewing//Occasionally hulk flames or devastator rockets)

As much as I want to write a massive review I am going to abstain because after 60hours I am still in act one and am convinced itll take me the next 3 years to finish this. Maybe there isn't an end and its just a legend? I dont know, but I am more than happy to sink my life into this game :]
