For bias purposes upfront for this review: I am a R1 workshop modder with 1000s of hours in the 1st game and I made several original workshop characters. I am also learning how to mod R2 currently.

My review TL:DR: Game is good for what it's aiming to be: a competitively serious platfigher. If you want to play platfighters more seriously, this is probably one of the best places to start. If you want a casual for fun game, R1 with workshop might be more of what you are looking for. There is a learning curve, but that's true of all competitive fighting games.

A lot of people in these reviews wish Rivals 2 was something else. They want it to be more like smash or more like Rivals 1 or less like PM. They want specific mechanics removed (floorhugging, CC) and they want specific characters removed. But ultimately, it is a good game for what it's aiming to do.

It's not the most casual appealing plat figher out there, but most people should probably know that because R1 wasn't a casual game either. Workshop did a lot to open that game up for more casual play, but there were years of its life where it was just the base cast. The devs support modding and will eventually support workshop here based on their roadmap.

Even if the game itself isn't perfect (there is no such thing as a perfect fighting game, people will always have issues with fundamental mechanics and how they are implemented), the dev team's approach to competition and community is miles above the other main game in the genre, and I support that wholeheartedly. It's a game trying to compete in specific niche genre where your other viable option is limited to a single large game, Smash bros, who's parent company dislikes its own community in both competition and modding.

You can't really play Slap city / Fraymakers / Smack Studio / Multiversus (RIP) / Nick All Stars seriously due to lack of playerbase. You can still play R1 competitively, and many people do. The devs still keep R1 as a side bracket at events, even though they are done with that game. That's really cool, and they supported workshop brackets for years too. If that sounds weird, it is cause it is, but it's also awesome that the devs of the game allow modded content to run as its own bracket. That alone is good enough reason to support this franchise into the future for me.

This game is amazing. Has good variety in classes that rewards different types of FPS gamers. I have ADD, so I like light assault with a SHOTGUN and ambusher jump jets, and it's always a ton of fun in a good infantry fight. There is a playstyle for everybody in this game with good variety in the environments.
