Blood West would best be described as a semi-open world immersive sim. The game is split into three acts, each of which is a large, open ended map with plenty to find. A blind play through will provide a fulfilling exploration experience. On the other hand, knowing where items are means you can get some good gear early, providing you can reach it without being torn to shreds by monsters. This pairs well with the degree of build variety on offer for plenty of replay value.

Stealth is present in the style of the Thief games with the ability to lean around corners and enemy line of sight that is extremely consistent. Melee combat is very competent and, as someone who has spent thousands of hours between Vermintide and Darktide, I definitely appreciated how tight the hitboxes felt on enemy heads.

While stealth is generally encouraged, direct combat is still viable and enjoyable. The western setting somewhat limits the available arsenal (revolvers, lever actions, double barrel shotguns, bows, crossbows, breech loading rifles) but it's more than adequate with good aim. The enemies are varied, creative in their designs and challenging to fight.

Light souls-like elements are present in the form of beds that will act as a checkpoint, fully heal you and revive some enemies. Dying also causes "soul flaws" that will merge into a strong curse after multiple deaths. These can be removed with a limited item or by completing a challenge provided by an NPC.

My only minor issues with the game would be the voice acting and the overall level of difficulty. The voice work is unfortunately somewhat inconsistent. The main character is voiced by the legendary Stephen Russell and the most prominent NPC is played by Gianni Matragrano. Some of the other voice work sounds amateurish, especially by comparison. I found that the difficulty dropped off dramatically by late game and I had so much ammo and other items in my stash that the game was chugging every time I opened it. That said, the good aspects heavily outweigh the bad and I would definitely recommend this game if what I've mentioned appeals to you.

Amid Evil was already an amazing shooter and this VR port definitely does it justice. If you have the VR legs to handle the amount of motion involved in a game like this then it's an easy recommendation.

The netcode for this game is unacceptable. You will be constantly rubberbanding and getting dragged back into attacks that you clearly dodged. Optimization is atrocious. I have a 4090 and the game can't maintain a stable 60 fps with settings on medium. Devs seem more concerned with balancing the terrible PvP than actually fixing the game.

If they ever decide to start focusing on things that matter during more than 5% of your playtime then I might be able to give this game a positive review. Having passable netcode during co-op is something that Fromsoft has been doing in this genre for 14 years and it's embarrassing that this game fails so spectacularly.

Edit: I was informed today that this game does not have level or weapon upgrade limits on PvP matchmaking. There may be some degree of scaling but it doesn't seem to affect the situation in any meaningful way. This is made far worse by the fact that, practically speaking, this game does not have any level caps. There are damage scaling caps as well as caps on carry weight, stamina and health but defense is uncapped. My highest defense stat is about 600 but tens of millions is achievable through cheats (yet another example of Easy Anticheat being useless). Every invasion is the invader killing you in two shots while your weapon deals about 10-15% of its normal damage and barely scratches them.

Lost 7 hours of progress because of the game's awful save synchronization system. Also lost a ton of progress on my file because the game doesn't give clients unlocks randomly. I tried replacing the file with a friend's and even that didn't work. The game has Denuvo tacked on too because the devs are greedy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The gameplay doesn't even really make up for it either. What a disappointment.

Can't play the game, even private, because the servers don't work. Payday 2 was fine with P2P, going always online was pure greed. The beta was fun but I can't give a positive review to a game that I literally cannot play.

Edit: Somehow people are cheating despite the inclusion of EAC. First big patch fixed ONE exploit. You might as well play offline but then you'd be stuck with how completely uninspired this game is. Half of the enemies are ripped directly from Dark Souls 3 and fighting a rat with 2k hp makes it obvious that there was no effort put in. This is embarrassing.

I'll consider giving this game a good review if From fixes all of the abusive ♥♥♥♥ in PvP. This game is basically unplayable online with 9/10 players relying on bugs to two shot you. On top of that, the netcode is still terrible with players constantly disconnecting and the same high latency ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that's been plaguing these games for over a decade.

Also, the bosses that allow co-op are completely arbitrary meaning that you basically have to look everything up if you don't want to completely ♥♥♥♥ a random region of the map for playing with a friend. Enemy balancing and weapon progression make no sense.

I got the original out of a cereal box as a kid loved it. The fact that there's a remake is the weirdest thing I've seen in a while. It's no Doom or Duke 3D but, as far as free games go, I think it's worth a playthrough.

What is Amid Evil?
Amid Evil could be most easily classified as a throwback to the Heretic games. First-person battlemage gameplay in a dark fantasy world. It's another game published by New Blood (best known for Dusk) and definitely lives up to the standard of quality that's they have established.

Gameplay
True to its retro FPS roots, Amid Evil has fast, tight gameplay. There are seven weapons which are distinct from one another in function. All of these weapons have a "powered-up" form as well which provides further variety. All are useful for the appropriate situation and never feel redundant. The movement is fluid and feels similar to Quake, albeit faster and more forgiving. The enemy variety is exceptional. Every area of the game has unique enemies with only a handful feeling like reskins. There is plenty of variety with the game frequently introducing new design elements like suspended globes of water that allow you to swim to to higher areas.

Aesthetics
Amid Evil has art and sound design that is both memorable and polished. The eight areas of the game present entirely unique styles that are reflected in level design, music, enemies and art assets. One thing of note is that the weapons are all normal-mapped sprites which change with the lighting. This is easy to forget while playing as they look like incredibly detailed 3D models. This game is overall beautiful and makes full use of the Unreal 4 engine to present a more "dated" style.

Conclusion
If you enjoy dark fantasy or FPS games, this is an easy sell. If you haven't played many retro FPS games, this is also a decent entry point. Overall, I have no issues with recommending this game.

This game did things the right way by giving the early seasons the representation they deserved. For that reason alone, I can recommend this game at sale price. The combat is also a pretty competent clone of the Super Mario RPG system which is noteworthy.

With the understanding that I will write too much about this game, here is the short version of my review:
Do you like first-person shooters? Do you find modern FPS boring? Do you like using lots of guns, killing lots of cool enemies and generally being a badass? If you answered yes, buy Dusk immediately and play it. If you answered no then you make me sad but buy Dusk anyway because it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ great.

Now, the actual review:
I first heard about Dusk just shy of two years ago from a review of a pre-alpha build and it immediately caught my attention. Despite the basic graphics, you could immediately see a strong basis for a retro shooter. The enemies were distinct in design and behavior, the guns were meaty and powerful and the movement was fast and buttery smooth. The icing on the cake was the extra bit of sillyness injected into various bits of the game (Full mid-air flipping, ridiculously detailed graphics settings and a dedicated weapon twirling button). The developer clearly wasn't taking themselves too seriously, which is a good thing in this case. All of this made me very excited so I did the only thing I could do, I waited.

The early access version was released in August, 2017. I purchased it immediately and spent hours running the endless map after completing episode one. Episode two followed a few months later and the third became available with the full release in December 2018. Even though the two episodes were amazing, I fully expected to be disappointed at some point. This is a game that wears its influences on its sleeve. Scraps of Quake, Doom, Blood and Heretic are noticeable to people familiar with these games. It would make sense that a game like this would play it safe and simply try to ride on the player's nostagia. The most surprising thing about Dusk is that it doesn't take the easy route. It pays homage to its influences but makes its own name. For this reason, the expected disappointment never came and I would consider Dusk among the greats of the genre. Dusk is basically the Shovel Knight of retro FPS. You know what it's about from the obvious influences but it's still not happy with just fitting in.

Dusk has every required trait to be a proper retro FPS: intricate and detailed levels filled with secrets, a diverse roster of fun and powerful weapons, deadly enemies which require varied tactics to handle, smooth movement mechanics that reward skillful play and the aesthetics and atmosphere to tie it all together. The game transitions between all-out carnage and slow paced horror seamlessly. This is aided by Andrew Hulshult's soundtrack which tops off the aesthetics of the game perfectly.

On top of all of this, there is Duskworld, the multiplayer section of the game. Currently you can play deathmatch with an active community. Team deathmatch, co-op and modding tools are coming next year.

Finally, I'd like to say a bit about the developer and publisher. A majority of development was handled by David Szymanski. He's a husband and father who seems like a genuinely nice person. I've had him reply to me in the Steam discussion section which says a lot about his attentiveness to the player base. He couldn't have made this game without his publisher, New Blood, who are easily one of the best indie publishers currently operating. They're more concerned with making great games than widening their profit margin which is something special in the current state of the industry. They also really care about fostering a healthy community and have the sense of humor to pin good natured ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in their Steam discussions. You should feel good about supporting them and helping them grow.
