Having played briefly at launch, I wasn't able to recommend the game. Since then, things have changed for the better. Having followed the development of this game closely, Fat Shark have are finally in a place where DarkTide is on square one just under a year since release, and is primed to drop limitless content in a compelling universe. We should be at the point where we've got much more content than we have, because they were still cooking the game when it came out of the oven.

In recent months I've come back to Darktide, much like other folk this was largely inspired by the talent tree reworks in Update 13 (I think.) I have to say, the game plays substantially better. Gone are the performance woes at launch, there are a lot more quality of life features implemented and FatShark have generally done quite well with the updates since.

With that said, there are still mechanics from launch that get on my tits. Selecting missions is a shambles, missions pop up sporadically, at varying difficulties (not counting the lvl 30 Auric Missions) this alongside perpetual grim dark settings mean that map variety is often thrown by the wayside. This is compounded by the mission names being very similar and at first glance indistinguishable.

With Vermintide 2 we had the process of choosing our exact mission, matchmaking for it and heading out once a squad is filled by Quickplay or players selecting your mission, or lobby within the server browser. Whilst more involved, V2's method is player agency oriented and much better than it's supposed sequel.

On the subject of variety, there is only one mission boss, the bubble man. These were called Lords in V2 and offered fun and challenging mechanics at the end of gruelling missions. Darktide's iteration of this is a far cry from V2's climactic and exciting mission conclusions. The Skittergate certainly comes to mind. Crafting is often the point of contention within the community but I can't speak for that, as I only have a fresh lvl 30 and am approaching my second soon.

The game in it's current state is fantastic, visceral, warp slinging, emperor praising, ogryn bull rushing fun. It is truly fantastic, but there are still some tarnished elements to the game. One of the biggest improvements is how much better the third person animations look, especially compared to how strange these looked in V2, where your perspective would show deliberate dodges, attacks, abilities etc, but to others you'd be waving your weapon like a stick as heads get lopped off in front of you. Now, you can see your pals kicking heretic butt in great detail, as the emperor intended.

I'm a massive fan of the co-op horde smacking format, I loved V2, I genuinely love this game, and I truly want it to succeed but it must continue to do this with the community in mind. I'm still learning it's higher difficulties and having a blast doing so. I truly hope FS don't lose this momentum and continue deploying banger updates.

Game is a grind - but a highly enjoyable one.

Have played on and off since just after launch and it's come a long way.

The new content drops are great fun and the game's farming has seen a lot of improvements as a result. A lot of the time, you're farming more than one resource/useful thing at one time, but this does come at a caveat as in traditional MMO fashion it does take some hours to get to that point!

However, new players heed my warning - Make no mistake this an MMO - you cannot ignore the 'bad' or less interesting mechanics this genre within Warframe, even with plat (the games premium currency) things such as grinding, crafting (thought lightweight) and reputation are musts.

Early Access Review
Game is a fun time-sink with plenty of potential. If you enjoyed Vampire Survivors this is a must pick, as it does all that VS does but better, though it's a little easier than VS it has some interesting scaling difficulty in the form of Curses, which unlocks higher difficulty curses when you beat them.

The devs are ambitious and updates seem to be rolling out at a decent pace, about once a month if not more often and they seem to be listening to feedback thus far.

Overall it's a great game and in a really good place already, I genuinely believe it will only get better.
