Thoughts after beating the game:
This game is good enough and short enough to be completed in one sitting (4-5 hours).

Obviously very reminiscent of 'The Thing', which no doubt it took inspiration from, narratively.

In a sea of ♥♥♥♥ horror game stories and settings, the story and setting of this one stand out.

The characters rapport and narrative direction of the game are easily the best parts.

Levels are fairly linear and I think there could have been some improvements on the complexity due to the already maze-like and vertical nature of an oil rig. Maybe make it worth exploring by adding achievement-tied collectibles tucked away in corners to reward the explorers?

Game feels more like you're playing through a movie than a survival horror experience, minimal gameplay mechanics so don't pick it up if you don't find that compelling. If you do like narrative driven games, I wholeheartedly recommend this one.

Early Access Review
TL;DR
Very compelling ARPG. I've played a lot of RPGs and ARPGs and I can say that with a little TLC and more content, this is a contender for an industry standard.

Notes so far:
1.Environment readability needs improvement - it's easy to accidentally run off a ledge to your death when you're trying to climb down a ladder or vines

2.There are a couple "puzzles" that do not effectively communicate a hidden area or jumpable location well - thankfully none of these have been in the main storyline so far

3.I think you should have more inventory slots to start off with. Early plague ichor (player upgrade item) feels 10x better to use on weapon slots/rings slots rather than resource inventory slots. IMO only resource slots should start higher, the rest are fine.

4.Better telegraphed enemy projectiles would be nice, especially when they are able to target you off screen

TL;DR if you like the souls series you will like this game

Don't avoid this game because of the users leaving bad reviews based on performance. Optimization like this is difficult because nearly every user's system is different, so obviously there will be some kinks to work out right when the game releases. By spending less than 30 seconds on the store page for LOTF I found a fix for my performance issues and now the game runs spectacularly.

Initial impressions having beaten the first two bosses:

Very similar to the souls series - down to the mechanics. I think the game obviously lacks the polish that is expected from soulslike games that we have become accustomed to based on Elden Ring. However, LOTF is the best soulslike game aside from the souls series itself I have played. Movement feels a little flat at the moment, but combat is very satisfying. The Umbral system is somewhat confusing since there are so many mechanics associated with it, but it is an interesting idea for creating puzzles and combat mechanics - just need to get more comfortable with it.

I am excited to continue playing this game! Give it a shot.

Thought AGS was going in the right direction with the new zone, expeditions, ultimate abilities etc but they re-affirmed themselves as a globocorp by adding a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ battle pass. I don't think anything puts a worse taste in my mouth and makes me want to play a game any less than adding this shameless, cash-grabbing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The fact that this system is prioritized over HUNDREDS of other features that would make New World a much better game QUICKLY is just obscene and it's a complete slap in the face to the community. Clearly, we know where the priorities lie at Amazon. They put on a good facade for a while, but at the end of the day money is obviously their priority. So much for all those "Community Events" and promises made! Add New World to the entertainmentslop pile!
