I didn’t expect a demo to have such a considerable amount of content, but it does. Having clocked in 4.5 hours I only find myself completing about 75% of the content that is available to the player. Controls are tight, and you can feel that the game features a wide cast of games in which it draws upon to build its system, but it’s unique enough to remain refreshing and balances a fine line. I think that applies to most of the game in terms of its design, soundtrack, and difficulty. Which to say is a success since the synopsis seems to want to hark back to the older generation while keeping its own identity. The game does not punish death too hard to ensure you are not dissuaded from experimenting with the system and are often rewarded for those who experiment. With small additions to more transparency to guide the user and a possibility of a map, I see a lot of a potential for this game to succeed.

This game has done things, irreversable things to me. I sometimes wake up from these night terrors with a cold sweat, panting in the darkness of my bedroom. Visions of a wife, a pet, maybe even kids flood my mind; the only source of respite that warms me in my terror. However, the ending is always the same. Blackened ichor fills my mind as my dreams fade further and further away from me. Had it not been for the paralysis I could’ve chased this ideal, the path I could have taken had I done things differently. That path was shut to me now, my future, morphed into a terror of the unknown that now stands before me. It pools in the corner of my room, taking a form that I cannot identify, even its subtle whiteness masked by the dark hour of the night. This beast does not move, and does not attack me. Yet it watches, maybe understanding the position I find myself in, as maybe I am not its only victim. However, as days continued and my mind is yanked from slumber it amasses autonomy, slowly but surely as I give it thought and legitimacy in my mind. Every time I awaken it inches closer and closer, form growing longer as the perspective moves from farther away, to almost looming over me. Now these days you can hear the subtle cacophony of droplets hitting the floor, growing louder and louder as I try to free myself from my cell, a cell I put myself in. My self incarceration only I can blame myself for, and my death penalty one that I had agreed to. These days, the question isnt what the beast is, but when it will change me, and swallow me whole.

Imagine making a remake that, instead of fundamentally changing the game to be more of a re imagining of the game "what the developers now thought what developers at the time thought they were trying to make" that can lose the appeal of what make the game as special as it was (and worth remaking in the first place). Instead you decide to just take what works, touch up what doesn't work that well, and clean up areas that absolutely needed it (15 years of dust needs some cleaning). Dead Space remake remakes what it absolutely has to by utilizing mechanics that worked better in future installments, but still keeping the essence of what Dead Space was supposed to represent and preserving its identity.

Even though I knew exactly what was going on I still felt that sense of excitement of playing a new product that had littered secrets just for returning players and changed things to keep me on my toes. This is a remake done right, playing the rose-tinted glasses version of Dead Space that I thought I played when I was first introduced to the series.

The jailer is the key, kill him and you’ll be free.

And when you're done?

Do it again

Please, Tynan Sylvester stop taking my time and money. Those crafty cartesians know by god that it is His will to spend my hard earned McWage/McIncome to buy his DLC and fuel the omnipotent machine. I do every. single. time.

Really cool DLC though
