Examina: A labor of Love.

I started playing Examina first back in 2019, when the project started gaining noticeable attraction. I was a huge souls fan at the time and was drawn in by the promise of a "Drunk Dark Souls", or so it was called at the time due. The non-standard controls gave it this impression to many, it seems. People played this game without experience and called it "Clunky", "Awkward", or figured that it was going for a purposely humorous affect (which indeed it can have, as the inexperienced player may find themselves falling over chairs more than they find themself expertly fighting right off the bat). Though, I have since learned that this is not the case. The controls are actually very fine, it's just not natural to the way games are unusually played. You swing your mouse to swing your sword, not bash the left mouse button. You need to move in a way that gives your swings momentum and power while also avoiding the enemy's assault. It's a demanding game for new players in this manner as it is severely lacking of a tutorial (which is both the biggest hurdle and the largest boon for this game, giving to it's uniqueness and "Trial/Error" gameplay.

Outside of combat, Exanima is a beautiful, if realistically punishing, game. The lighting system is nothing to scoff at and the physics engine is almost one-of-a-kind, especially for it's genre. Though, if I love anything about this game is that even 7 years after it's release date, we are still getting updates. The devs aren't the most translucent about updates and what they are working on (On Steam, at least. They have a seperate webpage though that they post about updates on), but nontheless this game is still being worked on after 7 years.

It's an alright singleplayer experience, though the multiplayer gets old fast, and sometimes simply doesn't work with local/friends. The graphics are alright, but I feel that the building aspect is lacking somewhat, due to most building blocks being the same size as every other ground block, which turns building into more of a hassle as you need to build a house large enough to put a door on (if indeed, you feel the need to make a traditional house), but all of the individual blocks are so much smaller than the doors/windows, and it makes things just take too long. Other than that, this is a good "Ark Alternative" for those that wish to have a bit more lighthearted and free experience, but still want the core gameplay of the original.

I am temporarily changing my review to negative until this new funcom launcher is either fixed or removed. Due to the latest update (and subsequent addition of the launcher to the game's startup), this game has been rendered unplayable for some and a buggy mess for others. Please fix your damn game.

The game is good but the fanbase is severely toxic and in a severe need of a bubble bath.
8/10

It is pretty much the most "meh" game ive ever played... its not very good nor is it very bad, as is obvious by the mixed user reviews.

not much to say about this but since the game was not particularly horrible I will give it a good rating.
