First and foremost or TL;DR: If you think this looks and sounds cool, you should buy it. You can feel how much the team cared about the worldbuilding and storytelling, you can tell it's a biopunk dystopian future setting and that you gorily kill things in it in very flashy ways. We need more stuff like this out there and it's a solid game with fantastic art direction.

This is, however, a tough one to recommend to your average gamer while more experienced beat-em-up players or older Guilty Gear/fighting game fans will have immediate leveraging on it's systems: Mostly to their benefit, sometimes not so much due to tiny inconsistencies.
The difficulty especially is a tough topic to chew on; I'd say love it or hate it, but they really are sides of the same coin here.

For the beat em up mechanics, this game lets you (and expects you) to overcomplicate your combos and move usage for faster clearing, better crowd control and mobility, flashy and satisfying strings that route into desireable outcomes that suit your needs: Whether it's recovering life, building meter, repositioning, faster damage or more efficient slower damage etc etc. But, if you already have a solid beat em up background, you'll notice this game won't really push you into doing those things or learning anything *specifically* new.
You can keep your crowd control quite simple and still do quite well without diving into said additional options, which unless you deliberately try to explore for fun, might make your experience compared to other games like Fight N Rage, stretched out.

For the fighting game mechanics, your ability to combo is truly legendary: Enemies remain in hitstun or juggled for very long amounts of time, giving you a sense that your character is just extremely fast, which is great! You'd be lying if you denied not wanting a side swap combo that costs no meter that just involves you literally running to the other side after a launch to then launch them again.
However, FG combat mechanics are hard to pull off (especially within this context) which makes the combat rarely buggy or inconsistent at times or with hit/hurtboxes that will make you scratch your head for not fulfilling their intended designed purpose. Many are just oversights to be worked in future patches so it's not that big of a deal, but the meta enjoyment of the genre will definitely elevate the experience here.

Now the abstract stuff, it's hard to find words to describe how awesome the character designs, environments, sound design and music truly are. I did not know how much I liked this biopunk aesthetic until it was presented like this and it sparked my interest in their inspired media.
The story playing out in Slave Zero X is obviously dark and well introduced by the characters' expressiveness, making you want to see more of the dystopian setting presented that made them that way. The style of the dialogue (mainly later on) might be a little too on the nose for me as if it's lacking any subtlety, but at the same time it's reminiscent of older dubbed anime, so it might even be considered a plus depending on your perspective.

If all of this sounds interesting, then by all means give it a fair and dedicated shot; It's a hard game.
