In a world where every game wants to be a live service that sucks your money out of your wallet with nary a pause, DRG strives to be a shining example of a consumer friendly approach to this.

The basic principle seems so simple that at first glance you wouldn't expect it to be so fun. Grab up to three comrades and drop onto the surface of Hoxes to complete some basic mission objectives. The twist comes in the form of the various bug-like resident of Hoxes who don't take kindly to you barging into their home and stealing their furniture. Erm. Minerals.

Combat the hordes, complete your objectives and evac via the drop pod to grab a beer on the space station and prepare for the next mission!

When it launched DRG didnt have any live service or seasonal systems. Every so often the Devs would just drop updates with new weapons and cosmetics just right there in the game, free for everyone.

When the Devs added a live service element I was worried at first, having watched so many other games nickel and dime me, but my fears were unfounded. The devs continue to update the game, with the bigger patch taking the forms of "Seasons" that have their own overarching story. Each season has a battle pass style progression tracker but without any of the cost associated with it. You get XP for running missions, and that XP feeds directly into your seasonal progress.

If you're the kind of person who likes playing dress up, DRG has more than enough skins and cosmetics built into the game to keep you going for years, and if you feel like you want to support the Devs further, then you can grab the DLC weapons/armour packs that usually come with each season (usually one pack themed around the season) for under £10.

Update:
So with the release of season 5 there has been a change to how items you couldn't earn in a season before it expires have changed. FOR THE BETTER!

If you didn't get all the way through a season when it was active, and didn't get all the rewards, you can simply go speak to the seasonal terminal by the drop pod, and select the season and content YOU want to work through. Not only will this roll your space station design and decorations back to that seasons content, as well as trigger that seasons on-planet events, any XP you earn will be funnelled into the activated seasons battle pass.

Thats right, you can now choose what seasonal rewards you want to earn, and even what season you want to play on. No more hoping the items you really wanted but missed will randomly drop out the loot pool! Fantastic!
