easily one of my favorite games of the year so far--if not my absolute favorite. not only does it look and sound spectacular; not only is its atmosphere so mesmerizing; not only is its writing phenomenal--but it is where Deconstructeam have seen all of their potential up until now finally blossom. (Essays on Empathy is incredibly interesting as a game jam compilation, but it is still like their other games in that it is more fun to think about than to play.) The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood gets you wrapped up in its world and characters, but also in its gameplay. the roughness you'd find in Gods Will Be Watching, Dear Substance of Kin, or The Red Strings Club has been shorn away, in favor of this undeniably compelling elegance. but the queerness at the heart of Deconstructeam's body of work is beating stronger than ever.

I also gotta say that this ♥♥♥♥ is packing some extremely emotional heat. you'll careen from laughing your ass off at its dialogue, to being mortified by an earnest and harrowing depiction of depression and suicidal ideation, to helping give a trans woman a makeover and seeing her, too, blossom. but its tonal shifts always feel earned, natural, and hit you like a freight train.

make no mistakes: this is the most beautiful game of 2023. not necessarily in terms of its visuals--though it also looks gorgeous, obviously--but on the whole. the vibes, the music, the narrative, the romance, the tranquil moments when you're carefully tweaking your custom tarot cards to make them look nice. if you're comfortable with all of the subject matters at hand, I don't think you can really go wrong with The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood.
