This game is a soft-horror deckbuilder with all of the weird ♥♥♥♥ we've come to expect from Daniel Mullins. If you like games that have a creepy story with a handful of interesting twists and turns, fourth wall breaks, and some truly creepy or disturbing imagery, this game is going to have a LOT to give you. The game continues to ramp up the difficulty in ways that are interesting and thematically meaningful, giving you insight into the characters, story, and world of this game. Don't be turned off by the difficulty, it truly is rewarding. If you're looking for a solid deckbuilder, you'll find one (or more??) here.


I don't want to spoil plot details in my review, but there are some great things about this game that you should NOT know going in, as I think experiencing them is half the fun. The game is divided into three acts, each of which is a different version of the game. The first act isn't even canonically the real inscryption. The way that it's slowly revealed to you how the original antagonist interpreted the game and how the final protagonist (and later, even the other characters) interpret and play this game is a remarkable feat of game design. Daniel Mullins uses the game and level design to enhance the characters by showing us how they see the world and what they think is the most interesting part of Inscryption. This (combined with Mullins' love of ARG and fourth wall breaking) brings the characters to life in ways that, by the end of the game, are truly moving. Absolutely my favorite game of the year, this game brought me to genuine emotion in its final acts. If you haven't bought and played it and you've read this far, I highly recommend you pick it up.
