PROJECT WINGMAN

Bought this game as soon as it released on Steam back in 2020 but then, if I recall correctly, it released in Early Access mode... so I decided to give it time in the oven for proper cooking!

Looks like that paid off but even though, I have strong mixed feelings about this game. As much as you do get fun times here and there, PW has strong irritating moments that just kills the fun to me. The many cheap shots from enemies is one nasty irritant! Also, why oh why doesn't PW hasn't ANY CHECKPOINT during missions? Sometimes, a mission can take more than +30 minutes to complete and from any kind of bad luck (didn't pull up in time from muddy filled ground; being interrupted from real life events meaning missed a turn or anything else). The difficulty spikes are unbalanced as well.

From what I've played in this 5h of playtime, I had good moments until the irritants simply killed the fun. I'm usually a patient guy but after restarting a frickin' mission around 6 times for the bad irritants, think I had really enough!

I'd say I prefer the Ace Combat series instead of PW. More forgiving, more rewarding and it has checkpoints! I might replay PW on another day but since I'm already flooded with games, it is unlikely.

What doesn't help at all for this game is the way the developers sold out to Sony's PSVR for the PS5. The PS5 version has exclusive DLC content where nothing was done for the PC version... the version that crowdfunded by PC PLAYERS.

OVERALL:
Had fun for a few hours then the strange difficulty spikes killed all fun to me.
Restarting a whole mission all the time is quite the time consuming, which I do not have that luxury in my life anymore. And since the developers doesn't update the PC version anymore, this is pretty much an abandon-ware. I haven't tested the VR mode but I'd imagine it could be quite... interesting!

The game run's good on my machine. No crashes or any technical issues encountered. PW run's well in Ultrawide monitor setup which is always an important criteria whenever I review games.

RECOMMENDATION:
Alas, I won't recommend this game for the irritants and the way PROJECT WINGMAN is handled by its developers. If you truly crave for a action-packed jet game, look out for the Ace Combat series. Sadly, there's not many on PC but the games are quite arcade-ish but fun! As for PROJECT WINGMAN, the game is not awful nor bad. I just really didn't liked the difficulty spikes encountered in-game.

I'll be strongly debating whether I support this developer or not if a sequel gets made down the road.

BEACH INVASION 1945 - PACIFIC

Another straight-forward, shoot 'em up "Tower Defense" game but this time, set into the Pacific area.

It is entertaining for a while but eventually wears out fast since it is the same beachhead but with different day/night cycle with either a clear sky or rainy day!

Camera in this game isn't as bad as the 1944 so it is improved here. Also, there is more variety in 4 beachheads to select. For the overall improvements, I do prefer the previous game 1944 with their superior weapons which really felt good shooting! In this 1945, it feels like some pea shooters sadly...

Game runs fine in Ultrawide screen, didn't get game crashes nor heavy technical issues.

For $8,44 CAD (35% off), I'd say it is worth it but you may want to play the 1944 game at first since I did found that one more satisfying gunplay!

BEACH INVASION 1944

Straight-forward, shoot 'em up "Tower Defense" game. A very good outlet after a bad day of work!

It is entertaining for a while but eventually wears out fast since it is the same beachhead but with different day/night cycle with either a clear sky or rainy day!

My only issue would be for the camera, that it goes funky at times and you can't use that particular gun. So you have to switch to another and switchback later. It is annoying!

Game runs fine in Ultrawide screen, didn't get game crashes nor heavy technical issues. Only the camera that goes weird and out of proper aim of sight at times.

For $6,50 CAD (50% off), I'd say it is worth it!

NOBODY WANTS TO DIE

A strong LINEAR detective noir story set in a retrofuture in the like of Blade Runner, Altered Carbon, Cyberpunk 2077.

The game setting, the visuals, voice acting, soundtrack: ALL TOP NOTCH! The UE5 Engine really shines in this game! The "Batman: Arkham" detective work is the most interaction that can be done aside from point and click for anything that can be touched.

However, the gameplay is VERY minimal and linear. You don't have much interaction to do and the "detective work" is very basic. It is unfortunate that this game doesn't have much of a "game" to play since this is mostly an interactive visual novel.

For this price point, it is forgiven! I'd just wish someday, we'd get a true OPEN WORLD, interactive game in this noir retrofuture universe.

I WANT TO HAVE A FLYING CAR AND DO SH!T HERE AND THERE WITH IT!

Technically speaking, I didn't run into any issues, bugs nor crashes. The game ran very well from start to end. Ultrawide monitor support is good!

OVERALL:
Not great but not terrible either. The game is appropriately priced for what it is. Just a shame that I would had wanted to explore the city more though! The story is very linear and closed sadly. Something that was irritating me... you can't reload a specific chapter. If you got past a chapter, you're SOL. To the developers: PLEASE, ADD CHAPTER SELECT!

RECOMMENDATION:
I do recommend this game for all points mentioned here, even with the flaws. We don't have many games of this type and I do hope CRITICAL HIT GAMES manage to fork out a sequel or a new game in the similar way of NOBODY WANTS TO DIE. Except, make it less linear and add more stuff to do! More like game next time!

MAFIA II - DEFINITIVE EDITION
Not-so "definitive edition" about this sequel, where there are only a few high fidelity textures but the rest of the game doesn't run all that well... A LOT of in-game slowdowns, especially while driving any cars.

I played Mafia 2 back in 2009 on PS3, where I really liked the story of this sequel. There are a few irritating missions here and there and the gameplay AND gunplay (you can carry more weapons in M2!) are pretty fine mostly. So again, the story itself is amazing and even better than the first game. Almost everything in that game is good: story, gameplay, driving, gunplay, voice acting, soundtrack... however, it is letdown by the poor performance from this "low quality remaster" of Mafia 2. The other Mafia: Definitive Edition is a complete remake/overhaul of the game and it shows! For this Mafia 2: DE... it is lacklustre and such a disappointing remaster.

The visuals are still serviceable and decent. The voice acting is top notch and VERY funny. The music evolves from the time period and it is a good listen. Just like the first game, the story is linear BUT you do have some liberty to explore a bit in order to equip gear (weapons or clothing) or upgrade your car. There are NO "FREE RIDE mode" in this sequel so you cannot "just explore" at your own pace. It has to be done during certain missions, if permitted to gather the numerous collectables out there. The AI is still average and very scripted.

So to reiterate; the story is very good (best story of the Mafia trilogy story IMO). The game is visually good almost all the time beside some strange high brightness that can be noticed in character faces. There are more characters to see in this game, contrary to the other Mafia games. Your sidekick, Joe Barbaro is such a funny character in each time you have missions with him.

The game does have poor performance in my rig, probably due for the P-Cores and E-Cores since the game keeps having huge dip in FPS while driving cars. The 2K Launcher may have an impact for the performance or maybe not. I didn't experienced this bad of performance dip in Mafia 1 DE and Mafia 3 DE.

Another big disappointments of Mafia 2 are the DLC. They are badly designed, lazy and mostly all of their missions have timers. I'd recommend you simply watch videos on YouTube instead!

Spoiler talk...
It is such a damn shame that it is never truly elaborated how and why you Vito Scaletta get's the contract to kill Tommy Angelo, Mafia 1 main protagonist. You only hear Vito saying "Salieri gives his regards" and that is it. No other mentions AT ALL about the Salieri's family. I do know M1 takes place in Lost Haven City and M2 in Empire Bay City so this could explain the total lack of information but nonetheless, there should had been some sort of connections here and there from the events.

OVERALL:
This remaster felt rushed just like every other Mafia games except M1 Classic, since it had some issues too at launch (not as bad as Mafia 3 at least!). I had good fun back in 2009 and now, 15 years later, it still is. So overall, I had enough fun with this game to recommend this sequel to anyone. The story is more fleshed out and the character's progression feels more realistic unlike Mafia 1, where you become the Don's best friend, 20 minutes later!

RECOMMENDATION:
I haven't played Mafia 2 Classic on PC so I can't compare the classic versus this "definitive-not-so-definitive" edition. I do recommend this game to any and all Mafia game fans out there and while at it, I truly recommend you play all the trilogy.

A new Mafia game is in the works and should be a prequel to Mafia 1... this should be quite interesting!

MAFIA - DEFINITIVE EDITION
Can't believe 4 years has passed before I finally play this remake!

Back in 2002, I played that good old MAFIA "CLASSIC" and I fell in love with that game. The story itself was amazing. Almost everything in that game was great... except the questionable race with crappy car controls!

And now, 4 years later, I finally decided to play this game through it all. The remake is a beautiful game! The visuals are really good. The voice acting is good and funny at times with the strange high pitch voices from Paulie and Sam. The music fits the time period and well, it is subjective to the player's liking! The gameplay is to the point decent most of the time but the gunplay itself doesn't feel the true impact of gunning down mobsters, unlike a well-made game like GTA V. The game is limited and flawed. Story is VERY LINEAR and you can't explore much of the city on your own. You are required to go into the FREE RIDE mode just for that. At least, the city is not bland and NOT static with the suicidal NPC's throwing themselves in your way like MAFIA 3. The AI is average.

So to reiterate; the story is very good (Mafia 2 still has better story IMO). The game is visually good almost all the time beside some strange high brightness that can be noticed in character faces. There isn't a lot of characters to see in this game, contrary to the other Mafia games.

OVERALL:
This game still felt rushed since it had some issues too at launch (not as bad as Mafia 3 at least!). But overall, I had enough fun with this game to recommend this Mafia game to anyone. It is a very good remake that is a welcome modernized game!

RECOMMENDATION:
I recommend this game to any and all Mafia game fans out there. The game is fun and the story is VERY good. It is just a shame that you can't take the tramway nor the train in this Remake though, unlike the good old classic!

... the inevitable Mafia 4 game that is in development should be a prequel to this Mafia 1 game... can't wait to play this out!

CLICKHOLDING

Click... click again... keep clicking... and you might see the light... you know you want to... click again and again...and the end? ...nope!

Not much to say about this "game" or "experience" beside building yourself a hell of great fingers muscle and a beefy wrist! A good thing you can just hold the mouse button for autoclicking but yeah, you can go faster too by mashing it!

RECOMMENDATION:
I know the game is quite cheap but I would recommend you watch some YouTube video first before "wasting" an hour or more of your precious time! Heavy "sex-work" references in Clickholding but that is pretty much it.

You may want to click forever since I reached the 20001 count and it could keep going for more. I had enough but surely one brave soul could just keep on going and going and going... like that Energizer Rabbit!

DEAD ISLAND 2

After years of development hell, here finally comes the awaited sequel to DEAD ISLAND!

How is it?
A pretty fun game to be honest. Very similar to the original game but with improved gameplay mechanics and of course, visuals... while the first Dead Island game was a feast for the eyes back in 2012, DI2 is a looker for sure!

Best way to describe it would be to mix a couple of existing game mixed into this one. Visceral melee combat like the first Dead Island and of course, the unavoidable DYING LIGHT and the horror from the "CONDEMNED" series, add some "LEFT4DEAD" adrenaline infused action and combine the whole thing with some "BORDERLANDS" for hub-like open world aspect, story telling and levelling up by doing quests. A very "Borderlands" way is the 4-way Co-Op gameplay DI series offer. I played DI and DI2 solo but co-op should be interesting.

DI and DI2 doesn't have day/night cycles and contrary to DI, DI2 has a night time for certain zones. While I preferred the DYING LIGHT aspect of "real time" day/night cycles since it added a lot of tension, DI series is more of a comedic approach compared to DYING LIGHT.

DEAD ISLAND 2 gives you a lot of content for its whole package. Just the game alone should take you a good 30 hours to finish. Add the two great story DLC's which would add another 10-15 hours of playtime.

POSITIVES:
+Great visuals of the gameworld and the gore system is really amazing for blood effects and dismemberment!
+Story is kinda cheesy, funny and good I guess? It clearly isn't Dying Light but it is serviceable.
+Addictive levelling so you can choose which new skill to pick in the card system.
+Neat variety of weapons.
+Creepy atmosphere (not as tense as Dying Light though).
+Brutal combat.
+The two story DLC (Haus and SoLA) are quite good and offer you a good 10-15h of additional playtime
+Good UltraWide Monitor support, FOV option.
+Didn't experienced any technical issues nor crashes. Maybe some slowdowns after hours of playtime though! It just needed a game restart and all's good.

NEGATIVES:
-EPIC GAME STORE EXCLUSIVE at launch. I hope it won't be the case for the inevitable part three!
-One pathetic mechanic that annoyed the hell out of me... constant respawning of monsters in certain spots that you have previously cleared moments ago. Heck, you just pan out your camera to another side and zombies just spawn right in front of you. VERY IRRITATING AND IMMERSION BREAKING!!!
-Continuous respawning of items, everywhere, kills the "survival feel".
-Repetitive side missions (love fetch quests? you'll repeat that from start to end).
-Frustrating combat at times.
-No driving vehicles in this game.
-Just like Dead Island and DI Riptide, the running function barely works properly (you gotta mash the 'shift key' every two seconds for it to works and even when it does, you run so damn slow!)
-Lots of invisible walls or linear levels.
-No parkour! I guess we were just very spoiled with DYING LIGHT's parkour, where the movement was fluid and worked very good but alas, DI2 is still very bland and often scripted too.

OVERALL:
Dead Island 2 is a fun game and is as good (if not better) than the first game. It is better than the lackluster DI: RIPTIDE and of course, DI2 isn't as good as Dying Light. I still haven't done a playthrough of Dying Light 2 but that one disappointed me A LOT in order to get a refund back then. I will give it another try in the future for comparisons purpose mostly but for the sake of this review, if you have played the first Dead Island, you will be in known grounds and just expect the same and some new stuff here and there.

RECOMMENDATION:
I recommend this game for any fan of a zombie smashing game! You don't need to have played the first game but if you did, you will be told some info here and there about the previous game events.

INDIKA

Well, after having just finished the game, what the hell am I thinking?

Disappointed to say the least. I'd put Indika in a YES+NO recommendation since there are parts of the game that are interesting and original but other times, it is just annoying with lame puzzles padding.

The story is messed up and seems inspired from Russian novels set in an alternate reality. I didn't like much the story to be honest. The gameplay also was not fun. The "retro-minigames" were becoming annoying too. They only have a meaningful way to tell INDIKA's backstory, in a different fashion.

The redeeming factors of INDIKA are the visuals, voice acting, music, dark humour with the Devil and the game's religious theme. Someone mentioned this game could be one hell (pun intended) of a A24 movie and I really agree there. INDIKA could be a great f-cked up movie but as a game, it was just too average.

The game supports Ultrawide screen very good and offers a good assortments of visual options. I didn't experienced any bugs, game glitches or crashes.

I didn't enjoyed INDIKA enough to recommend this game to anyone.
If you are REALLY interested, maybe try this once in a good sale?

STILL WAKES THE DEEP

I've always wanted to play an horror game set in an oil rig, something about being isolated in a critical situation. Still Wakes the Deep is a strong narrative driven game where you are a blue collar electrician, stuck in such a nightmare scenario where you go around trying to find survivors and of course, escape!

This game has many interesting settings mixed into one, where you can find strong inspirations coming from the movies "The Thing", "The Blob", "Leviathan", "Underwater" and even a non-horror one, "Deepwater Horizon" for the catastrophe of the oil rig.

SWTD is mainly a walking simulator and it has a few interactions to be had, like flipping switches and turning valves. You have many "run for your life" escape sequences and hide from monsters situations. The visuals, sounds and voice acting are all spot on very good. The oil rig itself was impressive looking and a treat to explore when you can that is.

The game is VERY linear but you do have some opportunities to explore a bit but not enough in my opinion. I found the catastrophe happening too fast and I wish you could had done some more "blue collar" work around with the other oil rig crew but it is not the case.

The story is minimal since you don't know much WHAT is causing the catastrophe besides some strange otherwordly "skin filaments" hanging everywhere. I wish you could get to know more about the origins of the "entity/ies" but again, story is minimally explained.

Game works very well for Ultrawide screen but as of now, it doesn't have a FOV option and at times, the in-game view is a tad too close. No bugs or technical issues encountered in my playthrough.

RECOMMENDATION
Still Wakes the Deep is an interesting game to experience and if you do like that sort of game similar to past games made by The Chinese Room (Dear Esther, Amnesia: Machine for Pigs, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture), then you will surely like SWTD!

I recommend you give this game a shot but maybe once in a bigger sale though!
