"...an excellent game in a sea of mediocrity..."

Are you looking for a Civ-a-like to play? Don't buy this. Go buy GalCiv 3 instead. Are you looking for a fresh, new look at 4X entirely? You just found it. Before I get into my personal thoughts [the review, essentially] I want to explain why I say this and why I feel how I do about my review, found further below the following four paragraphs.

To say Endless Legend is like Civ just because its a 4X game is like saying a cheesecake is a cake simply because it has the word 'cake' in it, or a pie because its formed like one. Endless Legend may be labeled as a 4X, but neither does it fit into the traditional mold of a 4X nor does it conform to those of its predecessors, the most notable being Civ.

One of the key principal differences, for instance, is that the land is divided into regions. In each region, there may only be one city. That's it. Choose wisely where you place it; finding out later on there are better resources to be had from founding elsewhere will hurt you in the long run. This is particularly notable just starting out. Rush placement for the early settlement lead, or explore a bit for a chance at longer term returns on prosperity in your capital?

Another key notable feature that I like is that each of the major factions not only has a different play style, but has their own major quest as well. Completion of said quest before the final turn results in an automatic win for that faction. [AI opponents do not pursue quests, major or minor] Is it easy? NO. Do you get rewards along the way? Certainly. Are the rewards worthwhile? Most definitely.

One of the final overhauls I want to mention is the combat system. Rather than Civ's straight out 'this is my unit strength, this is yours, let's do this' system, your units are grouped [as you see fit] into armies. When you engage another army, a small battle map opens and each unit is controlled manually by you, via a directive of three basic commands; attack, defend, hold. Pretty self explanatory. On top of that, there are faction specific and unit based abilities you can use in battle which greatly diversify the depth of combat, instead of just 'surround city with siege units, bombard, invade with one unit when done' as in Civ.

Review:
A/V: First off this game is gorgeous. I don't generally place stock on judging a game based on graphics, but it *really* adds to the atmosphere here. The level of detail is incredible. To supplement that, the ambient sound effects and music are just as amazing and deserve an equal amount of praise. The graphics get a small demarkation for having to re-draw everytime you tab out of the fullscreen interface, however. I am hoping this is addressed, but if not its not a major detractor.

Mechanics: As stated above, this game is a fresh look at a genre that, in my opinion, deperately needed new life. Endless Legend is that life, I feel. This game has introduced things in a way no one would likely have ever thought, and the best part is that the community continues to remain a large part of the process the entire way. If you do purchase this [or are on the fence] head over to the Amplitude forums and check out what we have all accomplished. Several dozen features and additions to this and their other two games have been ones suggested by or designed almost completely by the community. I digress, though. All of these mechanics may sound like a steep learning curve, and the first game through it is. After that one game, however, it flows much more logically and you'll likely end up asking yourself how such an amalgalm of crazy ideas never happened before this.

Miscallenous: There are still some bugs and flaws being ironed out, but Amplitude is very studious and responsive about addressing these issues promptly and responding to user feedback on how to resolve these problems until patches are released. There's even a feature in the game to create your own faction with your own selectable traits, including a couple that aren't assigned to a preset faction by default. Amplitude wants this game to be something for *you*, so if none of what I've written grabs you by all means don't feel pressured. If, however, you feel like Civ used to be enjoyable but has seen its days and you need something new, or if you just love fantasy and deep lore based worlds; this is your game.

Overall: I'm not a fan of numbered/aggregate ratings, so I'll just close with this; if you're on the fence after having read what I wrote, buy it. It will not disappoint. Its an excellent game in a sea of mediocrity that more than deserves a chance to shine.

Editors note: Updating this to reflect that at the time of review, the expansions were not yet released. I am going to leave the review as is, as the review was not intended to be an in depth guide on the mechanics of the game/expansions. The purpose is to cover the base mechanics as a means for comparison. Thank you! [Updated 11-24-2016]

Edit: As of 11-21-2018, I still hold firm to this review in the sense that the game has aged well so far, and continues to stand out among the 4X games I own. I still highly recommend giving this a shot if you are growing tired of the standard Civ releases.

Come again? The devs don't delete comments. Comments can't be edited. This review has nothing to do with ES2. Personally, your position of judging a small group of people based on a stereotypical model of how you see the societal climate in France right now is extremely flawed. The worth, value, and very essence of any game has very little to do with a country's political or societal climate at any given time. It's all based strictly on the individuals involved.

You're allowed to have that opinion, but being so close-minded will rob you of a lot of opportunities in life and is overall just toxic for you mentally. I have seen, and continue to see, plenty of negative feedback or criticism here on Steam and Amplitude's forums both and no one from their team is 'gagging' accounts or censoring it. Personally, I think you are buying into a self-built agenda to justify the fact that you paid for something that you don't feel you got your money's worth for.

I explained why in depth citing specifics and never getting out of hand. An amplitude developer gagged my account because I had negative feedback on their game. Perhaps in france it is common practice to silence opposing views or maybe even people who say your game sucks. Sorry that my answer to their censorship spilled over into your review comments section, I'm trying to reach the most people possible.

Endless Space 2 is going to be a disaster. France is in turmoil and they are going to put out a half finished game and cut their losses. I take issue with amplitude and all of their products based on their stance and ability to take criticism.
Bunch of flippin snowflakes

To each their own, tekn34k. If it's not your style of game, that's fine. At the least I would hope you'd explain why instead of simply settling like everyone else in the pool of sludge who leaves reviews by simply saying 'save your money.' That does no one any good, and it doesn't say why you feel that way or explain your position on or of the game.

I couldn't disagree more. Save your money.

Appreciate the referral, maybe I should just get a collective works page up and going here too before too long! When I played through Odin Sphere on the PS2I had a few month long chronicle of how that was going and my progress as I went. Very active community, and they hadn't had a new player in some time. It became quite a thing, a thousand or more posts in the thread by the time I was finished.

Sadly, I only have Call, not Shadow or the original STALKER. May have to look into that for Supcom, was always more of a C&C guy myself (they have done the same thing with it; fanmade launcher and new networking mods for online play, ongoing patches...wonderful stuff).

TtR's digital verion plays out very nicely, they get on pricing though. Wait on a good, solid sale so you can nab all the maps and keep in mind; purchasing on one platform (here, Android, or Apple Store) does not get you the other two. Requires separate ownership.

Aye my friends have been on me to play all 3 Stalker games then the mods for them as well. The comminuty is very active and great. War in the north I've had my eye on it for awhile. Been enjoying the hell out of Shadows of Mordor. Supcom I bought ages ago never had a computer that could run it till now. I hear from many that the online community has been consolidated under a player made launcher and the player base has increased exponentially and has more players then most steam games.

As for Ticket to ride, I play it too much in the analog world. Also on a side note I write reviews casually so thats why I stopped but to thumb this up. Please feel free to check this one out if you have the time to read https://solidboardgamers.wordpress.com/2014/03/20/let-the-games-commence/ I think you'll like it.

Wow Jonesy, Stalker is a REALLY steep throw out there as I haven't touched it yet. Have been looking for every excuse to get into it though. With AMD's new Crimson and now a proper review requested before Winter Sale, I may have to! War in the North I can do a proper write up on, I have finished it. SupCom as well, though I've not dug into Forged Alliance since getting it. (Was a gift from a fellow Twitch streamer). TtR is ridiculous too. ;)

I wouldn't mind being taken through your mind with either, Stalker ( great experience btw can't get enough of it.) War in the North, Supreme Commander, with the Forged allience forever client, I'd like to play more of that myself. Or if your feeling real ballsy you could try and tackle the beast that is Ticket to Ride :)
