You can grind to purchase additional characters with gold or crystals you earn from playing or logging in everyday. It is easier to buy the champions pack when it's 50% off. It gives you all the current and future characters. The lore of the game doesn't quite make sense to me. There are also cards you can use to modify abilites your character has. You earn credits during the matches you play to upgrade your abilities. Play them to your strengths.
