The introductory missions do a good enough job at explaining the game to newer players, although i wouldn't be surprised if you don't get pulled in by the game immediately considering I feel a lot of the enjoyment of this game comes from already being invested and caring about the loot you get. A good portion of this game is the grind to get better loot and if you do not care about that it can be very difficult to figure out what you should be doing next.

i also find it hard to see how people are to get engaged in a story that is 7 years going when half of the story content is inaccessible because of vaulting content, which is a shame considering the story is probably at the best its been in years. The best you can do is watch lore series on youtube which I don't think does it justice. It seems like Bungie wants to go for an evolving world where there is more of a "You had to be there" feeling. For example, one of the main story characters "Cayde-6" was killed off a few years ago and right now the intro missions go over how he died awhile ago and who killed him like its part of this worlds history that you werent around for. I think this is a fun idea in theory but it is difficult to get invested in some of the story if you haven't already been following it.

If you are looking to pick this game up because it is free, be ready to have a very small amount of content to play, or buy the season pass to have access to the current content. If you ONLY play free to play you have access to:

6 open world zones in which you can do public events, mini world dungeon type things called lost sectors, patrol missions, and other smaller things. By default I believe it is set up so initially only have access to one area but unlock more as you gain xp from playing. so in all you can visit these destinations:

- European Dead-zone on Earth
- The Cosmodrome on Earth
- The moon
- Nessus
- The Tangled Shore (edge of the solar system)
- The Dreaming City (The Awoken homeworld)
- Europa (cold place)

You can play the three core game modes without much restriction. This includes the Crucible which is the PVP mode, Strikes are similar to dungeons in other games where you run three people through a mission and kill a big boss at the end, some strikes contain mechanics that you have to do, and Gambit, which is a sort of PVPVE game mode where you kill PVE enemies to get motes that you bank and whichever team banks 75 motes first wins. You are allowed to invade the enemy team and kill them to stop them from banking their motes occasionally.

As of May 22nd, 2021 free players now have access to the raid "Vault of Glass". Raids are one of the main reasons i play Destiny 2 and they are so much fun. They take a bit of learning and require outside sources to find a group to play with, but it is 100% worth it and I would recommend trying it out as soon as you are a high enough level to do so.

All in all, if you are a free to play player, don't expect too much unless you are willing to buy the pass to play new content every 3 months or so and a large expansion every year, but if you are willing to do that and you can get invested in the loot grind, get ready for one of the best looter shooters out there.
