I liked it a lot, but I'm a sucker for Sci-Fi horror, so I'm biased.

In short, if you liked Dead Space, you'll probably like this one too (comparison is inevitable since Glen Schofield led both franchises), but there are several things you need to know beforehand:

Pros:
  • The visuals and sound design are the most polished aspects of the game, truly jaw-dropping.
  • The game really nails the setting and atmosphere. Most of the time, gory and oppressive, other times hauntingly beautiful.
  • Voice acting and mocap direction are excellent (Sam Witwer is amazing as always, wished he had more screen time though).
  • Gunplay is satisfying, as the VFX and general feel of the weapons are punchy and responsive. Weapons being printed out is cool, and their skill trees are rewarding and reasonably short.
  • The "TRUE ENDING" is divisive; I mostly liked it story-wise (save for one very important detail), without spoiling anything away; it is bleak, shocking, and hopeless.
  • Death animations and finishers are metal as hell. If you are into gory action "Rip and Tear" style, you're in for a ride. Even "stealth kills" are laughably loud, btw.
  • The Main campaign is a non-grindy, straightforward, fairly linear single-player game. If you are into that, you'll get what you paid for.
  • Riot Mode DLC; unexpectedly enjoyable, the closest thing we may get to experience DOOM in 3rd person. A "Horde Mode" highlights all the good aspects of the gunplay and telekinetic mechanics, and adds lots of traps to the mix.

Cons:
  • The game is so heavily focused on melee, but at the same time, is not very well-thought-out, leading to repetitive dodge/melee loops with lackluster crowd control.
  • Lack of enemy variety.
  • The sudden difficulty spike on the two final "Boss Battles" in the main campaign and DLC got me foaming. The sudden difficulty spike is unforgiving.
  • Last Transmission DLC; Guess what? The "TRUE ENDING" is LOCKED BEHIND A PAYWALL. Seriously, WTF? One of the worst practices ever.
  • I couldn't care less for Contagion and Outer Way DLCs, as they are overpriced and unnecessary. Adding them did more harm than good to the game's reception.

For me, it's a 7/10 game. The predatory practices in regard to the DLCs kept me from rating it higher, but it is a good game. The fact that we are never getting a sequel is sad. I would have loved to see what Glen had in mind with Dani's story or any other character in the same universe.

Despite all that, it's worth it. Buy the Deluxe Edition on sale, though; otherwise, you would get an incomplete game. :)
