Stardew Valley is a wonderful game which reminds me a ton of old Harvest Moon games, just a little bit more...nuanced? I guess? Anyway. There's some more character development than what Harvest Moon offered, for the most part, and some of the characters' stories are pretty intense, which makes the game interesting. There's a ton of stuff to do, from befriending the neighbors, to sticking the middle finger up at Joja Mart's gross capitalism, to running errands for little spirit apples called Junimo. There's of course the farming and the animals to take care of -- but besides that, you can start a brewery of your own, be a master of pickles -- if that's your thing. Raise an orchard of fruit trees, or grow flowers and befriend the bees. Up to you. Further, there's a bunch of achievements which net you new hats and artifacts to donate in game which nets some unique furniture. You come back to the game because there's just tons to do. Even if you play through multiple years (you'll have to in order to complete some main quests, per se) there's often errands you never had time to run, or discovering new ways to organize and optimize the farm so you could just go out and forage or mine for the rest of the day. There's a strange relationship between a Wizard and a Witch which brings you on yet another side quest -- oh and you can day-trip to the Calico Desert if the farm is feeling a bit stale.

Anyway. Highly recommended game!!

Edit: With the 1.5 update, it has been incredibly fun to play through this game all over again here and on the Switch. It's fantastic, the content is beautiful as always and here on PC the modding community makes returning to the game a fresh experience quite often. Though it released initially a few years ago, it continues to be a labor of love, contributed to by the community and by the dev himself. Thanks so much for this amazing gift of a game!

Edit II: Yeah 1.6 update is just as fantastic as all the other updates. The green rain situation was a nice touch, actually. I won't spoil why, but just go talk to your very silly neighbors during said event and the day after -- it's worth it.
