I play this game like once a year at Christmas or New Year's for some reason unknown to me. I only play survival mode. I am a baby so I mostly play below 100% difficulty and that's fine for me. I forget everything I know in between play sessions and have to relearn how to build an economy and wall setups and all that jazz. I think the voice lines and the aesthetic is kind of poor and it's actually visually difficult to distinguish units sometimes because it all becomes a blur of gold and brown. I end up with basically the exact same strategy every time and not much varies. Doesn't matter. This game rules. It scratches some weird directed city-building itch I have even though it's not one, it's more of an RTS/Economy manager, but if you mess up instead of just abstractly going bankrupt a thousand screaming zombies swarm your walls and ♥♥♥♥ you up. I think it's great.

It's less of a game and more of a kinetic visual/graphic novel with killer cinematography and music, along a scattered collection of short stories. A ground-level, aggressively Australian Neil Gaiman-esque urban fantasy, the primary plot thread can be sort of a little meandering to follow initially but it wasn't long before I found myself drawn in by the characters to find out what happened next. It might be a bit too 'internet' or 'millennial' for some people's tastes (though in my experience it just kind of sounds like what a lot of my online friends sound like these days), but I found it thoroughly enjoyable, and well worth the time.

This game is really, really impressive. Indie character action is rare and indie character action that gets it is even rare, but Assault Spy is an example of the latter. If you're the kind of crazy obsessive who's looking for smokin' sick style, or can finish Bayonetta on infinite climax, you'll find what you're looking for here.

It's not perfect, of course - to be honest, it's a lot glitchier than you'd like, though usually nothing game breaking. Checksaves are plentiful. Enemies are far too projectile heavy to be honest and like many character action games you can find yourself fighting the camera a bit (hint: use the lock-on system, it actually exists, I promise you). The story is just an excuse to rampage through a facility and beat up a bunch of robots, though it's amusing enough.

Combat, though... man, playing with Amelia is so my jam. Teleporting from opponent to opponent, dodging through attacks and charging for Seismic Hammers all day erry day. And the bosses! Actual challenges, fun to figure out, the visible guard break mechanic that actually lets you see where you're at at a given time... it's a good game, Brent. Try it and see.

It's even got a Bloody Palace mode.
