The original was a big part of my childhood on the gamecube back when I didn't know anything about "completing" a video game. I remember playing it a bunch when I was like 10 years old or less, and I always loved Spongebob. I think I beat it at one point or two because I remember the final boss, but I kept playing the game on new saves anyways haha.

I finally got around to playing the remake that is rehydrated and had a blast. I 100%ed the game other than unlocking the theater because the theater reward is largely underwhelming: It seems to just be a few screenshots taken in-game. Would have expected some concept art or production bloopers, so I decided to pass on wasting time farming for the 40,000 shiny objects needed to open the theater.

I would say the game holds up well today if you are looking for a casual platformer and are a fan of Spongebob of course lol. I wouldn't go as far to say the game is a masterpiece, but it's definitely a gem in my book. There are some parts of the game I unintentionally managed to do in an unintended way and there is some jank (minor bugs/exploits) here and there. Game is well optimized: ran well, didn't crash a single time, is graphically polished, however, IDK why you can't adjust the graphics in game. All you have to do is edit a .cfg file but kinda lame you can't do it in game.

(The story is exactly what you'd expect as a Spongebob fan haha)

Regarding multiplayer it is completely dead as expected, but the game did launch quite a while ago so I'm not surprised. Not like you buy this kind of game for multiplayer anyways, but it was an added feature so I thought it was worth mentioning. I think you can set up private games with friends if you wanted to, but never attempted to do so becauuuuse: 1. I don't care to do so. 2. I have no friends. From what I've heard the multiplayer is just beating waves of robots which would get boring quickly.

When rehydrated initially launched, IGN gave it a 5/10 which virtually everyone disagreed with...and now I can confidently say, I too disagree. The game has flaws, it isn't the flashiest, fast-paced, skill-demanding platforming game, but overall, it is an enjoyable and charming experience. I can see the game getting a 7/10 at worst imo, but I would give it an 8/10 myself.
