The core gameplay is Fatshark, the slightly rushed and janky launch state is Fatshark, the promise of continued attention, polish, and content, is very Fatshark.

The monetization? The strangely rushed nature despite a vocal community saying it needs more time in the oven? The perfectly functional real-money shop using mobile game premium currency quantities, rotating "deals", and ominous timers all while there remain significant performance issues that have been there since the first closed beta? Classic Tencent. While I love playing it -it truly is the best 40K game I've ever played- I cannot in good faith recommend it at this time. Maybe in a few months when they've fixed some things and they roll back how aggressively microtransaction-y it currently is. I hope that that's soon for all our sakes.

EDIT: Looking at the review now, quite a lot of it still rings true. There are issues with optimization, the weapon variety does not match the choices of the setting, but the gameplay is still tight as ever. Fatshark is unmatched when it comes to moment-to-moment gameplay. With the recent update lifting a lot of the issues with the crafting system, and previous updates adding a wealth of content, I feel I can finally --in full confidence-- recommend this game.

You should completely ignore the premium cosmetic store, though. Because ♥♥♥♥ Tencent and ♥♥♥♥ spending more money on a game they already expect you to pay full prestige title cost for.

Hotline Miami is a game that is possessed of a few traits that elevate it from good to great.

The hypnotic soundtrack plays perfectly in to the mayhem you cause, and the bright, neon colors outside of the map you inhabit grant this sense of separation from the violence which the graphics themselves encourage.

Everything is organic, from the controls to the respawning, the transition from gameplay to story.

I can't go into anything in fear of spoiling, but I assure you, this game is worth much more than the pittance you will pay for it.

In short, Hotline Miami is one of the best games I have played in recent history, and I practically guarantee your enjoyment of it.
