It's certainly Dwarf Fortress. While certain things have been altered the core game is the same. Many things, such as labor assignment, have been streamlined and therefore are a bit more obtuse, but you can still drill down and get close to the same manic granular control as you've had in the past. FPS death is large factor if you play long enough, but for a game I have played for free on and off for over a decade I am happy to support the developer and their new publisher in their attempts to bring some modern function and a new generation into the joy of this storytelling abyss.

While this game is niche even among the genre it helped create, I think many who had a passing interest in the past will now find it much more accessible than the older versions so long as they remember- losing is fun!

Early Access Review
Methodical and calming. Until you forget about fuel in the lines and everything catches on fire. The sound design really sells it.

After my first go about with this game I can safely recommend this game for anyone who is truely curious about it. From first glance it is most definately a point and click strategy game. Gather supplies, upgrade your shelter, keep everyone alive. Simple, right? The simple concepts and some what reptition of keeping yourself alive may seem shallow, but all that changes once the world starts reacting with you in it. This game has a beautiful way of purveying a level of helplessness constantly scraping at the walls to keep your people's head above water. All of this is struggle is reinforced by the biographies and dairies kept by your characters creating a level of personalization.

The decisions you make, or don't, really do have a lasting effect and at the very least struck a chord with me. I don't want to spoil the intrigues within the game, but as winter approaches and the war rages on it was distrubing to see how quickly I went from playing cleanly to becoming another stealing, murdering thug. As one of my characters seemed to love to say whenever I was questioning my actions, "Will we ever be able to go back to our normal lives again?"

Bravo to the game develper, this game was as disturbing as it was riveting.
