Honestly, this game might get better after the next expansion (which is most likely going to be heavily overpriced considering how Shadowkeep and Beyond Light - latest 2 expansions - turned out to be).

F2P is basically unplayable, you get a short introduction that you can finish in under an hour, aside from that it's just strike playlists, public events and bounties all the time.
I'm not going to touch the subject of PvP and Gambit (PvPvE) because I don't play them that much, but from my experience I can describe them with a single word - terrible.
Aside from that, the grind is very monotonous and unrewarding, you can spend the whole week on a single activity and not even get a mediocre roll of a weapon you want, which is sometimes gated behind RNG of the weekly reset. (And that's coming from a guy that has hundreds of hours in Diablo-likes and other very grindy games)

Oh, one more thing about PvP, there's this Trials of Osiris gamemode which is heavily competetive with people going after 7 wins in a row without losing a single game for the best rewards. The problem is that the game is full of cheaters, a simple youtube search is enough to get hundreds of videos showcasing them. But that's not all, sometimes it's not just some simple wallhacks or aimbots. I'm talking balls to the walls infinitely flying with infinite ammo and abilities, resurrecting yourself etc. Bungie seems to have started working on the problem recently, but for reference, I can tell that the problem rose up over a year ago. That's a whole expansion and over 4 seasons which shows how they really sometimes feel about the state of the game.

The game might have a bright future, but this is the present and it's not looking good. If you want to try it, I highly recommend you to wait until 6 months after the next expansion to check if there's even anything to do for the next 6 months until the next DLC.

Yeah, it's pretty good for a few hundred hours if you like grinding games.
