This game deserves some serious respect for trying to do something different, mixing RTS mechanics with this really fun third-person manual unit control across a variety of historically accurate battlefields, including a variety of famous battles as well as some lesser known engagements across most of the major fronts of the war (more to come in expansions, I'd imagine).

There seems to be a trend of hating on the A.I in this game, okay it's not perfect, sometimes the soldiers make stupid decisions if left to their own devices, but who is playing video games for them to be perfect? I want a video game to actually try to do something a bit different, let's not forget that this game offers you such an insane amount of control over a battlefield that I don't think any other game in history comes close to matching (not including previous Men of War titles) and does most of this without fault.

Not to mention that the developers update players on developments, patches etc almost weekly, constantly listening to player feedback, tweaking, adjusting and adding all sorts of extra weapons, vehicles and textures as casual free updates. When appropriate, they release paid expansions, adding yet another gigantic amount of gameplay that somehow manages to be even better than the base game. They didn't have to do any of this, gamers in 2023 are for the most part, impulsive hypocritical consumers that constantly complain about half-baked overpriced paywall content while simultaneously buying it and allowing the cycle to continue. Gates of Hell defies that modern trend and does it so well.

Hundreds of hours of crazy fun and focused gameplay and that's EVEN before you consider workshop mods...
Endless respect for this game, can't recommend it enough.

Technological innovation is what we needed to get a new Half-Life and without a doubt it was worth the wait. Now that I've experienced City 17 in VR, I can safely say I never want to go back to mouse and keyboard.

This universe is only ENHANCED further through its usage of the new medium, you get such a great sense of scope to your environments. Genuinely one of the most tense and terrifying experiences I've ever had playing a game.

(One thing people aren't mentioning enough in these reviews is the sound design! It's fantastic!)

One of the greatest science-fiction stories ever told, slightly dated / experimental gameplay made up for by its characters and incredible world-building.
