The game does feel rather generic. The world levels feel rather barren and is just going from marker to marker and killing the same enemies. Level design doesn't really feel unique and enemy AI doesn't really seem engaging or even somewhat challenging. Weapons feel rather the same and don't differentiate between each other too significantly. Progression doesn't really feel engaging either as the itemisation and upgrading of modules feel really clunky and cumbersome, it's basically almost the same system as warframe but feels much more clunky to access and upgrade.

The story, what little I have played of it, feels very generic and also unmemorable- and the characters are as well. I will say that I do enjoy some of the character designs though, and that the grappling hook also feels really nice to use and chain across the environment.

To summarize, the gameplay and progression systems lack depth, I never really felt myself becoming stronger in the few hours I played and putting power progression behind modules feels awkward. The world does feel rather bland and there wasn't really any moment in the game that wow'd me. It's not a game you haven't already played before if you are familiar with cooperative shooters- but it might be something enjoyable for you if you just want to grind out games and disable in game audio and listen to music as you grind.

The first few hours of the game are a genuine delight. There is something about calling down airstrikes onto a horde of enemies that feels really satisfying and just really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. Playing with friends and dying from all sorts of crazy scenarios was really fun as well. Unfortunately, the game suffers from many game design issues and technical issues.

It's been a week into launch and the game is still plagued with matchmaking, server, and general connectivity issues. To even get a chance to host a game and have the matchmaking functional, I have to restart my game every time- and even then sometimes it doesn't work. At any point in time the matchmaking can just completely break or the servers go down or players in game will time out at any moment - most often right before extracting and completing the mission. For a game focused on cooperative play - this is absolutely awful.

As far as weapon balance goes, the only viable weapon in higher difficulties is the breaker shotgun. And get this, the only other viable weapon is its variant - the incendiary breaker shotgun. Once you unlock those- there aren't any other primary weapons to look forward to if you actually want to be effective and not gimp yourself. Most of the progression track is just cosmetics with an ugly shade of yellow plastered over it- or helmets and armor sets that you can't change the color to and you can't really make outfits with because the color schemes with helmets / armors / capes are really restrictive or clash.

Late game difficulty is just the game spamming highly armored enemies over and over again- and since you don't get rewarded for killing enemies- alot of engagements you will be running away from to conserve ammo and resources rather than doing what is fun - the airstrikes and general gunplay. Stratagems you call down to rain fire also seem poorly balanced in this aspect at times - with only a handful of stratagems being viable lategame. Even then they are extremely inconsistent with their hitboxes and registration - with bile titans and chargers constantly being able to tank them. The mini nuke in the game has a really small radius and 40% of the time it just feels like you wasted it- and I'm still not entirely sure if it is by design or if it is bugged- which is how I feel about 70% of the content in this game.

You unlock most of the requisition gear you want pretty soon- and since there are only a few viable ones then there isn't really much room to experiment or try for different playstyles. The only thing that's really left to do is farm for samples to complete your item upgrades or farm medals for mediocre cosmetic options, that's basically the game progression.

Overall, there is a decent game here- the first few hours are great but this game is very frustrating to play. Matchmaking just doesn't work and the developers cannot get a handle on it. Weapon and stratagem balancing are all over the place - and over time the game just stops being fun because you have to jump through so many hoops just to get it working. If the developers fix all the technical issues and balance the weapons / stratagems and take a second look at meaningful progression, I will amend this review. In its current state - I cannot recommend Helldivers 2. It feels like an early access game disguised as a full game release and frankly I'm tired of this modern gaming trend of games being launched barely functional and mostly broken on release. Helldivers 2 falls into that category.

One of the best fps games I’ve played in a long time. The gunplay and movement are very fluid and smooth. The game design is excellent, constantly throwing you into the action and everything serves to enrich the gameplay. You are put into a flow state to kill as many enemies as possible. It’s fun, it’s rewarding, it’s stylish- and very satisfying to play.

The game encourages you to try out all of its 6 different classes, 70+ unique weapons, and an insane amount of unique item buffs to create your perfect build and get that faster clear time. There’s a jet pack, a grappling hook, and a slide jumping mechanic similar to black ops 3. Move fast and kill fast, slaying room after room of enemies and bosses. Everything works towards progressing and making you stronger for the next challenge and the next difficulty and reinforces good decision making when you play.

It’s fast paced and action packed and will actually improve your aim, tracking, and target acquisition for other fps games you play- you are constantly improving your own gameplay. This game is a master class in first person shooter game design and I recommend any fan of first person shooters to try out this gem.
