This would be a good review if you could play the game with custom controls. Instead, you're forced into either just controller or just keyboard? Want to use gyro? get ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Want to use flick stick? Get ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

PSO2 New Genesis is a MMO made by SEGA where you play dress-up, pull out a gun, and start blasting.

The launch has been off to a bit of a rocky start, so the content of the review is up to change.
THE GOOD

- The graphics. Rendered on a completely new engine compared to base PSO2, it looks pretty damn beautiful. Runs well, too, as long as you set your graphics at a reasonable rate as to not light your PC on fire. The game's set pieces really show the impact on what good lighting does to make a game look good.

- The soundtrack. Just like the original PSO2, the soundtrack is mostly atmospheric outside of battle. It's very soothing and calming, sets the mood to calmly explore the land uninterrupted. The occasional banger is thrown in, too.

- The combat. Compared to base PSO2, the 6 currently available classes feel a lot more loose and fluid compared to the originals, reminding me a lot of what I felt playing Phantom and Luster in base. However, some weapons still feel a bit rigid, namely the Twin Machine Guns and the Grenade Launcher. I've heard complaints about bad enemy AI and how New Genesis combat was very spammy but it kinda lines up with my experience playing against almost every enemy in base sans a couple end-game bosses. That might be because SEGA released about 8 years of content at once in the west, though, and I didn't play on JP servers.

- The movment. You know what sucked in the original PSO2? Having to mash dodge to move as fast as possible, which still felt slow unless you were playing Luster. Now, you can literally just dash. The movement is satisfying and fluid, melding itself into the exploration-based gameplay quite well, while also not being too finicky. You can also finally freely move in lobbies, when you couldn't even fully sprint in base PSO2 to my memory. Overall, it helps New Genesis feel a lot faster compared to its predecessor.

THE BAD

- The story. Just like base PSO2, I don't really care for it. However, unlike base PSO2, it's actually a game with playable missions and not just cutscenes for multiple episodes at the time of me writing this. To my knowledge, only chapters 5 and 6 are actually playable in Base. on the other hand, it gets a bit in the way of having access to certain features, which wasn't in base PSO2's Global release. Don't know about JP, because once again, 8 years of content on release globally.

- The content. There currently....isn't that much of it from what I've read. I've been playing the game for 2 days, and am only barely level 10, though so I'm not really sure if it's as bad as people say. Some people might just be speedrunning through all the content as fast as humanly possible, maybe influenced by base's global release having more content at launch because it was 8 years of content at once

- Photon Arts, or the lack thereof. It means there's no reason at all to keybind your weapon action, since you'll have more than enough space on your weapon palette to put it there. Every weapon (not including tech weapons due to magic) only get 3 photon arts each, which can't even be leveled up from what I've played (once again could be wrong). When you have 6 slots available for arts on each weapon, it leaves very little to customization of how you want to use that weapon.

THE "OH MY GOD SEGA PLEASE FIX YOUR GAME"

- The personal shop. It's hidden behind a paywall. So is trading. Two essential functions to a MMO's economy are forced to be behind a paywall, and this was also in the original. It's dumb, and I don't even know if it's only like this on Global, because apparently it has a lot more paywall stuff than JP. I can somewhat understand if it was a way to protect against bots, but it still seems dumb that I have to pay real world money to give my friend an item they want.

- The HUD. While it certainly looks better than Base's it's....literally just taken from it with a new coat of paint. Even some features that have to be greyed out because they aren't in New Genesis yet(?) are there, such as personal quarters, alliance quarters, viewing a character, ARKS ID, and moving to their block from the friends menu (don't know why that least feature isn't even in the game.) To make matters worse, it wasn't even fully redone! It still mentions the Gateway Ship when you retry a Story Mission!

- The lag. While probably a temporary problem due to a huge update for an already somewhat big game, the game has severe lag issues when many players are present. It never gets too bad to the point of being unplayable (in my experience anyway) It's still really annoying when the game suddenly decides to stall for 10 seconds, and when it resumes you're instantly dead because of it.

ADDRESSING OTHER COMMON COMPLAINTS

There are a lot of complaints on steam about the game that this doesn't talk about and I think they should be mentioned.

- The Open World. having an open world formula, but I think it manages it quite well. The game's movement helps making traversing between locations less tedious, and somewhat enjoyable to climb whatever they player wants to. I prefer this to the base game's "Go from point A to point B and then do the thing" for almost every non-urgent quest. And maybe the story, but I never played it because the whole first half was reduced to a giant cutscene. People have also called it a BOTW ripoff for.....being an open world game with challenges placed around the map? Using ideas from a hit selling game with it's own unique twist? I don't know? I guess literally anything that was inspired by something else is a ripoff then, or is that not what people are getting at. I don't get it.

-Grinding. People compain that the game is very grind-heavy. An MMO. That is grind heavy. Which is every MMO. It's kind of how every MMO and RPG, which this game is both of those genres, operate. PSO2 Base was also just as grind-heavy if not MORE grind-heavy for end-game equipment and levels. Is grinding annoying? Yes. The problem is that people are complaining about something as if it's only present here. The only reason there wasn't as much grinding in Base PSO2 for a lot of people was because of the 8 years of content at the Global Launch.

-Softlocks. I haven't encountered these, which is why they're mentioned here. According to people, the game can commonly softlock on the tutorial if you don't do exactly what it says. I've also seen people say it softlocked during character creation, which I also didn't run into, so I don't know exactly how bad it is. The closest I got to a softlock was randomly getting disconnected from the game for no reason at all 3 times in the span of 10 minutes.

Overall, I'd say it's worth playing if you're willing to wait for new content to come out. Content seems to be getting added a lot faster than the original PSO2. With the 2 classes and first major content update planned to be added in about 6 months over time, possibly to make up for a current lack of content right now. Yeah, the launch is a bit rocky, and I wouldn't be surprised if the initial release was a bit rushed to meet a deadline.

Devil May Cry 5 is a wonderful way to get into the series. It's simpler than the other games and has great visuals. The gameplay on Dante and Nero is fast and fun. However, the game has one big problem.

V. V is not a fun character to play, at least in my experience. He's slower, and methodical, using summons to do the damage for him. This is interesting and fun in concept, however, in execution it leads to a lack of feedback on the player's end. You don't feel like you're actively involved in doing damage, and I never find myself even trying to do V combos, instead opting to just button mash and still get SSS. Having to Play V's levels again is one of the biggest reasons why I haven't tried to play the game on harder difficulties yet. However, that's just my opinion.

In conclusion, this game is the best gateway into the DMC series, since it has less complexity than DMC4 and isn't as hard as DMC3. It's a blast to play, and the mods it has can increase replay value and can improve the experience with things like multiplayer Bloody Palace. Big recommend.

EDIT AS OF JANUARY 2020.

Vergil. Vergil is a character that now exists in the video game. Vergil is a very fun character that exists in the video game. It makes it possible to replay the game without having to play as V. He also, at least in my opinion, is the character with the most balance between style and ease of use. If you get DMC5 on Steam, you should also probably buy Vergil.

This game is really fun for people who just want to have a good time. I end up spending countless hours just messing around in the hub doing minigames. Great game to play while in a VC with friends.

"Two games got a new update, Terraria and Minecraft. Terrarians be like:1000 new items and 300 more enemies. Mincraftians be like:Bug fixes. Terraria > Minecraft. That is all. P.S, Frost Moon theme rocks. Keep up the good work, Re-Logic."

So, I've come back about 5 years after writing this review, and wow, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, do I sound like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who doesn't know that you can't compare these 2 games. And as someone who has now played this game for close to 400 hours, yeah, still a great game.

However, it gets kind of grindy. Grinding enemies for rare drops, mining for ores and rare materials, etc. It's not a game for everyone. It has a lot more mechanics based on combat compared to Minecraft, and has a bigger focus on it. It's also in 2d.

I would recommend this game for anyone who has the patience to play it, since it can require a lot of it. Built-in mod support is nice and adds replayability.

even though I didn't use mods for any of those 400 hours.
