Super fun game, basically a mix of Terraria, Banished, and Oxygen Not Included, with super cute graphics to boot.

I usually don't write reviews, but Song of Syx scratches an itch that I've been looking for. It's like RimWorld, Anno/Caesar and Factorio combined, but simplified than any. You build up a production chain to get more population and build an army. Getting more pop means you can expand your industry to increase production or do more things like build new services to get pop faster, or to expand your army to conquer more territories. Currently the conquest part is very unfinished. You can only attack territories atm.

The scale of the game is pretty epic, e.g. if you wanted to make an army of 1000, you'd need 500 people to craft things like food and equipment, so you'd need to take care of those 500 people first, everyone has their own stat like bathroom needs, hunger, religion, environment, food pref, entertainment, etc.

TL;DR It's a great city builder game, but still missing out some crucial parts. I would recommend solely from a citybuilding genre view. But even if you're a fan of citybuilders, then I'd wait a bit before the overworld parts are more polished.

Below I talk about some flaws of the game that isn't about lack of upcoming features.

Despite this being one of the best games I've ever come across, my problem with the game is the lack of depth, there's not that much to do besides building a megalopolis that is just a factory. The military aspect is to either defend said megalopolis or get resources thru conquest. The game has only numbers to offer as of current, as individuals are just worker ants and nothing more.

There's a lack of storytelling through the populace. Your population is just working to get YOU more population, nobody has any flavor or history. There is very little interaction between individuals on a personal level, there's only things like murdering that I'm assuming is purely random chance based on the lawfulness stat.

At the end of the day, the reward is looking at numbers and going "Ah, I've gotten x amounts of y now, yes!".

Before you ask "Isn't that the point of every city builder? To get productive numbers and marvel at your handcrafted city?"

In terms of citybuilding, the game is amazing albeit incomplete. Besides citybuilding, I believe the game has an amazing potential to be something like RimWorld, allowing the player to experience stories from the interactions generated by the game. It's not truely a sandbox since all you can do in the game is reach a highpoint.

I hope the dev goes in a direction that adds more flavor to the individuals of the city that player painstakingly built. Although I'd imagine that would be hard to do. There is already a great foundation for that such as dread/submission stat, or the prisoner/slave/nobility status.

Over all this is a fantastic city builder that has potential to be one of the best colony sandbox games, maybe surpassing RimWorld since it has the modding potential.

Note: Steam says 1.1 hours but I have about 50 hours in the game already.

Great game, probably the first and last visual novel I'd ever play (let alone pay for), I'm not really a visual novel-guy but this game was just amazing. The way the devs made the gameplay blend so great with the narrative and story was execellent.

SLIGHT SPOILER ABOUT THE ENDING

The only con is that the ending was kind of a let down and there are many gap holes in the story, besides that, everything was well executed.

Great game over all, would recommend to any simulation buffs. I recommend you buy all of the DLC as the base game isn't that fun without them.
