Is the (non-DLC) cast comprised of nothing but females? Well yes.
Are a significant portion of these ladies "fan-service" design wise? Err, yeah.
Does the game sport a large (non-DLC) cast? Not really.

So why do I enjoy this game so much? Because what it does right, it does with major polish and care.

Don't feel discouraged by its roster or by the predominently competitive fighter focus (an example of what I mean, the input notations whenever you perform an action are displayed to reflect an arcade fightstick), this game should not be turned down as its animations are so fluid, they challenge even those of Ark System Works, the 1920s aesthetic combined with art that compounds the works of the West and East in animation, making for a very appealling looking game.

The gameplay also demonstrates a sense that the developers loved fighting games and a couple of other things ("Hello Nurse!") while also demonstrating full awareness of some things in fighting games that are rather tripe. What's that, you only like playing one character, well you can trade tag partners for boosted power. Hate having to guess which colour palette's which on the start screen, well fear not, the "Start" button's there to help! Constantly hitting the pause button in fights offline by accident slowing gameplay down, well have no fear, the game makes pausing require holding down to trigger! Made a mistake on selecting a character, don't worry, the back button will let you back out (Not as common a problem in most modern fighting games granted but still). This and many other gameplay features, some even being added as the developers tweak away at their endless beta (want to quick-select a pre-set team? There's a macro for that!)

With the promise of an endless beta and more quirky characters to come (which you can get for free if you own this game before their official release) Skullgirls is an investment I do not regret making, now if you excuse me, I have a Jazz solo to play in the midst of a match before I pummel my enemies with a giant arm made of brass instruments!
