The FitnessGram Pacer Test
As I listen to the Pacer Test, I am once again nine years old. My mouth is full of the taste of blood. My limbs are sluggish, uncooperative. My chest is burning. "Will I fail again?" I wonder, and I cannot make it to the line. Coach Kunkle shakes his head. Filled with a mixture of relief and shame, I am the first to finish. I must walk around the gym in circles. They all look at me. They all think of the time that I cost their side the win in dodgeball because I could not throw, the times I was so slow I clogged the running line. They hate me. I know it. The devil whispers in my ear: "The day of the lord will come like a thief in the night."

The Pacer Test's cheerful beat plays on. The children's faces are red, determined. For the 4th time I stop to "tie my shoelace." Wanting only to stop, to be still, looking longingly at the water fountain I know I cannot use until the test is over.

I am young and I am weak.

All is shame and thirst and the taste of metallic glue on my tongue.

Another lap. Life is a series of pointless and repetitive exercises.

Red flesh, thirst, and metal. My body is weak. I am young but someday I will die. It will be sooner than I think.

Life is a multi-stage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues.

God has come to reap the Sinners.

15 Hours played
With 8 fighters, 25 stages, 30 including all Slap Ball stages. Packed with an astonishing single-player Adventure mode that took me a full hour of playtime to beat on the hardest difficulty, Slap City offers far more in a single package than any of its competitors. And while it occasionally felt like pruning away some of its weaker bits could have made Slap City an even stronger and more consistent whole, excellent use of mechanical and aesthetic additions make it stand out as far more than just a rehash of old ideas.

While the game was released on PC, it's very highly recommended that you use a controller, specifically a Standard Gamecube controller using a USB port. It’s also remarkably easy to jump in, choose your favorite character, (out of many) and just start fighting. Since it doesn’t take much more than the control stick and two buttons to have access to most of a fighter’s moveset.

Multiplayer is obviously a staple in competitive fighting games, but most lack authenticity among it's single-player modes. Slap City, however, goes very in-depth in their story. Consisting of 10 original stages, the single-player is fully customizable, from stocks and fighter skins, to difficulty.

Slap City also offers several original game mechanics, unknown to many other developers, such as clutch reversal. This technique is used by pressing the clutch button during the animation of specific attacks for each fighter, which reverses their facing and horizontal speed. Uses of the said clutch button may differ depending on the chosen fighter, but they all share the same moevement based clutch mechanics. Effects of clutching (known so far) are as follows:

• Pressing the clutch button whilst hanging on an edge will make the fighter perform a short hop in the opposite direction.
• Clutching while moon walking, (yes you can moon walk) will make the movement faster and traverse further.
• Clutching while shielding will make the shield larger and increase knockback from attacks, pushing you further, much like lightly holding the shield button on a controller.
• Clutching while in the air prevents fast falling, allowing for down air attacks to be performed without falling.

All in all, this game, in my eyes, is a masterpiece. From the downright amazing graphics, to the almost non existent tier list, Slap City will always have a place in my heart.
