I waited four years for this game, and its everything I love about video games.
I have finished the game after around 130 hours on tactician (with 100 previously on early access), but that would be on the slower end.

The thing that excites me the most about Larian games particularly, and is not something I usually even care about in games, is the 3D level design and object models. Its a weirdly specific thing but you will understand it when playing, its as if you are given a real life board game set sculpted to perfection over every inch of the map. The only games that ever made me feel this way were Half life Alyx, Divinity Original sin 2, and now Baldur's gate 3. Climb a certain tower over at Baldur's Gate and take a moment to appreciate the city underneath you.

There are some issues currently with act 3, it is less reactive, fps is worse and many fights are too easy. Larian will likely patch most of the problems in under a year, but I can still recommend playing the game right now. Its not perfect, but I will propose that as a testament to what video games can be. There was internet drama over people saying Baldur's Gate 3 sets an unprecedented standard for other games, but the reality is that it is as mortal as the rest of them. No game will be perfect, especially when attempting to go with a scope as large as what act 3 is, how complex it must be considering all the little differing paths you could take along the way.

Act 3 may be unfinished to some extent (at the time of writing this review) but it also has far more innate potential than any other part of the game, and it didn't stop me from enjoying the complete experience. The game is quite a compact experience, I didn't find myself losing focus too much, or getting stuck anywhere in particular. I also didn't think I would play it more than once, but I now expect a higher than likely chance I will.

All's well that ends well.

Game has potential but there are two major problems holding it back at the moment

1. RNG is too prevalent, you don't know where your bullets will end up in critical moments.
2. lack of balancing around the end of round upgrade / deficit options.

Its good for about one hour, or when you beat the game on hard. The next difficulty is a big leap and I find it essentially impossible.
I definitely see how a game like this can win Ludum Dare 50 and that's very impressive, but it simply needs more tuning before I can recommend it as a purchase on steam.
