i will freely disclaim that I have huge nostalgia goggles for this game. I bought it on the psp after my second ps1 disc died. I am extremely happy with the updated visuals and the rearranged music. I will also note that there are some moments when it stutters in combat, such as when an npc companion casts a magic spell, or uses a special attack.
However, after all my friends picked up Trials of Mana, that also had some bugs that eventually got patched and smoothed out. I'm happy to wait until that patch comes out for Legend of Mana. The stuttering doesn't hurt my game experience that badly, to be honest.

I love the visual style of this game and I always have. The game play is a little awkward by today's standards, but that's part of it's charm in my book (again, see nostalgia goggles). The localization has been improved so that a lot of NPC dialogue either delivers a good punchline or things just make more sense in the story. The game doesn't take itself too seriously and each location in game is distinct and beautiful. There are multiple storylines going on in this game, most not really connected to one another. The game can be incredibly non-linear, especially for a new comer.
Overall, recommend this game, imperfections and all. It's pixel sprites with freeform combat against a beautiful 2D background. The different storylines are each charming in their own way. And you get a wonderful cactus son who will love you unconditionally, and write a diary about your exploits if you come home and tell him about where you've been.
