TL:DR - Use edopro/ygoomega instead
Strange banlist/release schedule, somewhere between TCG and OCG.
MAXX "C" being legal really bogs down the whole game, especially for people used to playing TCG. It's essentially a minigame you need play play around EVERY match, and punishes you for trying to play the game.
Relatively good new player experience (you can realistically build a near-meta deck), however the flow of gems quickly dries up and you're left either grinding for weeks to get a fraction of a new deck, or making alt accounts to relive the new player experience and actually get enough stuff to make a deck.
Don't even bother spending money on this game aside from maybe the starter bundles. The money-gems ratio is absolutely absurd and comparable to buying physical packs irl, but without having anything to show for it after you close out of the game (for people unfamiliar with the TCG, opening packs is mostly a waste of money IRL, so this is even more so)
Speaking of the new player experience, it's quite a mixed bag as far as tutorialising goes. The full tutorial will teach *most* of the stuff you need to know to play (main exception being handtraps), however the "mandatory" part of the tutorial only teaches the player the basics of really old yugioh, and the starter decks are so abysmal that i imagine a lot of new players are completely turned off from the game. As far as knowing what effects do/are doing, master duel is pretty good on that front, having a full log with the specific effect being highlighted.
All in all, whilst a good place to learn the fundamentals of yugioh, I would recommend switching to EDOPro or YGO Omega once you find your footing, as both of these games allow you to build whatever deck you want with you choice of banlist, including OCG, TCG and alternate formats such as GOAT.

-Spawn in a server
-Find basic gear
-Start building base
-realise 40 hours have passed and you have a small mansion with metal doors
-Get shot from the window
-respawn in a town close to the base
-get a hockey stick
-run towards your killer, then realising he only has a pistol
-clobber him anyways, getting back all of your loot
-he returns, 5 days later in a tank, blowing up your entire base
-suddenly realise that you basically just reinacted WW2

Incredible game, quite hard to get into, but immensely rewarding once you do so.
