This indie game offers an engaging experience that can easily captivate players for hours. What sets it apart from other city-building games is its innovative approach to gameplay, which emphasizes combining various building assets to create new and unique structures. This creative mechanic adds a layer of complexity and intrigue, ensuring every session feels fresh and exciting. However, it's worth noting that this focus on asset combination results in some content limitations, which may leave players yearning for more variety.

Ultimately, playing this game is a delightful journey, leaving you with optimism and satisfaction as you watch your virtual world flourish.

With each free massive update and every new expedition over the last seven years, this game gets better and better. It's a game I can always come back to when I want an epic sci-fi experience.

Early Access Review
Who likes Viking? How about playing in a sandbox? How about building and surviving? Get Valheim. Live your inner Ragnar or Bjorn, or Odin, or Thor. Explore, build, hunt. 'Nuff said.

I have to agree, with some of the negative comments so far.

The game is visually appealing, the game mechanics are fairly easy to grasp, it fits. Sailing is the fun part of this game. The PvE content is enjoyable but that's where it ends for me. The new player experience only lasts for the time you start the game and enter the PvP world.

The enforced PvP is after minutes of exiting the intro is a kick in the X. As a new solo player, once you've completed the intro, you're left to your own devices and at the mercy of others as you figure out what to do and where to go. In both times I started the game, I was pretty much ganged up on by other players as soon as I left port. You fight back and then it becomes a cycle of harassment until you scuttle your ship and start anew somewhere to reorient and continue with whatever you were doing, which could place you randomly somewhere else far away from where you initially started. First time impression, the enforced PvP sucks. There is no lead up, no time to prepare; I can understand if you have a boat full of loot, pirates be pirates, that I can get behind, and that can be the thrilling part as you race back to sell your loot. But if the other players are complete trolls picking on new players as they start to play the game, then they'll simply ruin the experience. Game needs PvE only servers or a time-limited "protection" indicator for new players to get a handle on the game, other games similar to this do it with success, not sure why it has to be PvP all the time. People will just take the fun out of it if you're solo playing and trying to enjoy the story aspects like Tall Tales or simply looking for the buried treasure, it's definitely a game where numbers are required, solo players be damned.

Even if you play with others, it's not a fun experience unless you know them. I started an Adventure with a small sloop with one other random crew, who simply did not communicate. It was only when I decided to take the ship after 15 minutes of silence from the other player and sail away did they finally started talking by swearing at me for leaving them behind. At this point, is this game worth paying full price for if the effort to reach the fun part is going through hours of bad experiences. I assume if you've already done the intro then the adventure aspect should be to just start playing. The other player simply ignored me by without saying a word in text chat or voice. What's the point of the Adventure with random players if they go about their game as if you didn't exist. Yes, I imagine this could be a fun game if you have friends to play with that are on the same page, so far, not a fun solo or multiplayer random experience.

The other thing that kind of surprised me is that fact that once you leave the game, you don't start back at the same point you left. I had quit the game to come back 10 mins later to find all the progress and loot I collected on the ship is gone. Which is disappointing because the game forces you to stay online to keep progressing. If you don't have time to sell your loot, you leave, it's all gone when you come back. At least that what it looks like to me, not sure if that's by design. If it is, that sucks.

Overall, if you want a solo pirate game, this isn't for you. If you want to simply spend a few hours playing with random people, maybe if they're communicative to make it enjoyable. The best way that I can see to really enjoy this game, is play it with friends you know and then sail the seas with people watching your back. It's better than seeing the ferryman over and over and over again.

EDIT: I'll admit that I may not have given this game enough of a chance, especially since I was able to get a refund after 3 hours of playing it. It's not a quick-play type of game, it requires time that I wasn't willing to invest in and quite frankly the first impressions of being repeatedly dying after just starting didn't help. Other comments stated you will be frustrated and angry if you're playing this game solo. That's no lie.

After reading the official forums and seeing the same experiences by others is kind of disheartening. I really wanted to like this game, although, I'll admit that I did not jump on Discord, Reddit, etc to try and find other like-minded people to play with. But that is also a problem, I shouldn't have to find like-minded people to play with "outside" the game.

I may decide to re-purchase this game again at a later date. Hopefully changes can be made to make the new player experience better.

This demo was quite fun, missed a few things to get the full achievements in my first play-through, and it doesn't hold your hand and I like that about the game. Devil is in the details and you have to pay attention to the lore. I agree with some of the other comments, voice overs definitely needed. There are some inconsistencies with the quest pop ups as they appear to change mid-way through. The boss fight was challenging but definitely beatable if you set it up right, you'll have characters that will fall but if you focus your points right, at least two characters should defeat it. Combat was a little clunky which I'm sure will improve. Looking forward to the full game.

If you like fast-paced games, top-down ship shooters, sci-fi then this little gem of a game is worth the buy. It's so good for a very simple concept.
