Actually play Mount & Blade: Warband (or wait for M&B2) or StarSector instead.

I wouldn't get it. It's a LONG game with loads of grind. If you're looking for a space sim I'd recommend Elite:Dangerous instead. It's prettier, more satisfying, more dynamic, and is going to add the ability to land on planets soon.
