Do. The first inclination when one is born is to do - to act without reason. An infant hasn't developed enough to be fully conscious, so its actions don't reflect the desires or motivations of an inner self.

Be. As one develops, however, these actions begin to blend together to form such an identity. Here, Scooby suggests that one's identity, or even one's consciousness, is simply a collection of actions that have accumulated throughout one's life. Some schools of thought under Scooby interpret this to mean that consciousness is a series of predispositions established by reactions to one's developing environment. Others, however, claim that Scooby defines "to be" as the long chain of actions one has taken from the moment of conception up until the present.

Do. It is here that free will comes into play. After one has "been," one is finally able to use identity to forge new pathways; these decisions are informed by the previous identity and thus its preceding actions, but by finishing his iconic statement with a second Do, Scooby is signaling to the reader that something new has taken place. Thus, to Do again can be separated from the predestined and environment-based actions of one's infancy, and each human being is imparted with the ability to determine, to a certain degree, their own future.
