Amnesia is a pants sh*tting experience (nearly) throughout the whole game. It revived survival horror and brought it into the mainstream...

...however...

...once you discover the pattern behind the monster encounters, it's over. As in, the tension disappears and the fear factor becomes non-existent. In addition, the main protagonist's reactions are way overdone. He gets a seizure and hyperventilates each time a book falls off the shelf. It's not scary, it destroys immersion and makes the protagonist seem like a total wuss, especially when my own reaction to said book is a resounding 'meh'.

I recommend it still since, other than horror, it can be an entertaining adventure game.

For those curious, I will write about the pattern down below.

*SPOILERS*

It's not hard to discover the pattern, unfortunately.
  1. The monster spawns are entirely scripted. They spawn very often once you take a puzzle item or solve a puzzle. Rarely when you enter a room.
  2. To prevent from being killed, close the door to the room the puzzle or item are in before doing what you need to do. When the monster spawns, it starts attacking the door and gives you time to hide.
  3. To hide, just break the line of sight. You don't even have to enter a dark area.
  4. Keep hiding until the monster music stops playing. Once this occurs, the monster literally despawned, i.e. it vanished, disappeared. You can now run around freely until another monster spawns.

There are one or two exceptions where the monster is already there, has a defined patrol route, and does not despawn.
