Review --> Siege Survival: Gloria Victis

"This War of Mine" meets a medieval scenario! Here, too, it is important to collect resources in a hostile environment, where every step can mean your own player's death. You also constantly stumble over emotional decisions, should you help, or should you look the other way in your own favor or even be attacked? All of this for their own survival behind the castle walls and to support the few remaining soldiers who sacrifice themselves against the overwhelming power that threatens to break in.

In the world of the MMORPG "Gloria Victis" this strategic resource management and survival game plays as a welcome offshoot. A hostile and superior force has invaded the native lands and taken and devastated everything except this last bastion. Behind their castle walls, the few surviving citizens sit and try everything to expand their site during the day, to carry out helpful handicrafts and to repair buildings that are damaged by fire and stone projectiles during everyday attacks.
At night they set out to spy on the enemy, which at least can bring small advantages in the fighting, and to scour the devastated city for remaining resources, utensils and possible helpers.
In order to keep the interior of the castle "running", food and water must be provided or produced. For this purpose, a small bed can be tilled, chickens and pigs cared for and a rain catcher can be constructed. For better tools and weapons or armor, craft benches are gradually being built and upgraded, and beds are being created to relax.
In addition, you can work on a tribok, which is used in defense. Many upgrades are also based on rare finds in the ruins and abandoned houses around the bastion. Trips to the island of pitch cookers to find “ammunition” for the Tribok can also be worthwhile.

This will soon create a progress tree and an economic cycle that can hopefully be well maintained so as not to starve to death behind the walls and to continuously support the frontline fighters. Because if the citizens do not regularly provide the soldiers with food, drink, medicine and bandages and repair their equipment, the last line of defense will soon come to an end. Therefore, it is often necessary to put aside your own needs and send everything to the soldiers. But watch out, the animals bring meat again when they starve themselves, but then that was it with the regular supplies of eggs and dung. And when the most skilled craftsman dies of thirst or the warrior with the most extensive backpack dies on a foray because he does not dodge the roaming guards skillfully enough, everything becomes all the more difficult.

Fast, fast, nimble, nimble helps at most in the first 2 or 3 days / nights, but then it must be precisely calculated and assessed which resources can be used and how and which risks can or should be taken.

Historically, every new day is started with short stories or reports and the current situation is explained, usually by the commanding officer in charge. At certain points in the largely deserted city, there are also event points that require decisions from the player or offer options (e.g. a shorter route through tunnels from the bastion to the market). Many areas first have to be shoveled, as the intruders' fury of destruction blocked accesses with rubble. Good for those who have happily found a shovel or who can improvise one with an improved workbench.

If a citizen was spotted too often during his forays through the night (even if he could still run back quickly to the bastion), the patrols become increasingly sharp and the cones of vision of the controlling guards take almost every path, so it hardly seems possible there still to get through.

So it quickly becomes extremely difficult to hold out the days until the rescuing reinforcement, as there is always a lack of resources. And if you can't get ahead in the city, there won't be any more supplies.
The level of difficulty increases a little too quickly, but of course it also prompts the patient to do more repetitions and thus in a certain way increases the incentive to replay if the frustration does not win.

The medieval world is graphically very beautiful and, above all, detailed on the screen and the animations are also excellently implemented. The controls and general operation are soon internalized and the general game processes are quickly recognized. The fine-tuning of plundering and economic activity results in subsequent games, but luck is also part of it. Those who are persistent enough will learn a lot of strategically influenced and entertaining bad hours. The story is always the same, of course, but the course of the game changes a bit due to different approaches.
