Yes, if you liked the first game and want an investment purchase.

As of now, it's still incredibly barebones. It lacks a lot of content, QoL features, and the UI is a bit of a mess, but the skeleton that is there feels quite strong. I enjoyed the first game quite a lot and I think this has the potential to grow to the same level and beyond. It just needs a lot more time and work, which is all fair for an early access game that came out fairly recently.

Quite a short game but I had fun with the time I had with it. Took me around 3 hours to complete fully, including finding the secrets which kind of trivialize combat once you do, but I guess that's to be expected . Overall I would recommend it as an experience, and the price point felt good for the enjoyment I got out of it.

Combat in general felt somewhat lackluster, with needing little interaction other than holding fire and circle strafing, or even standing still out of range for some of the tougher enemies. Bosses are probably the epitome of this, with most being almost entirely unable to hit you as long as you keep circling around them. Unlimited ammo and a very small selection of guns probably added quite a bit to the problem of not having much to do in combat.

The exploration and metroidvania elements similarly felt like they weren't quite there. There is a clear sense of progression and needing certain items to progress in certain areas, but a few upgrades felt underused or near useless altogether. The map does loop around and connect to itself at points but backtracking didn't come up very often in completing the story, so the only time the layout felt really beneficial to me was when I was scrambling around to find the last few secrets. (As a side note, the amount of doors and tiny rooms you have to go through felt pretty frustrating when I would have otherwise been able to quickly zoom around the map)

So as a boomer shooter and as a metroidvania individually it isn't the best, but I felt that putting the two together was a neat idea and done nearly as well as it could have. The shooting could have benefited from more weapons, respawning enemies, and limited ammo/ammo pickups but it would have eaten even more into the metroidvania design. I can't say for sure but I suspect that engine limitations might have something to do with some of these issues as well.

I don't have much to say about the story, like the rest of the game it was simple but enjoyable and interesting. The atmosphere of the game however is probably its strongest aspect. The art was great, the sound was fitting, and together with the story it helped to paint the picture of a bleak and gooey world. I just wish the boss fights themselves were as cool and interesting as the characters and their designs were.

As a 2-3 hour experience with great atmosphere and cool ideas that aren't fully realized, I feel like I can say I recommend it for its price. Maybe wait for a sale if you're still not quite sure, though.

idk, this is my first real serious review. I liked it. Support small devs.
