[NB: Received for free on Steam but bought on Bethesda since launch - they sent out an email to let us active on Steam for free :) I also got the Fallout classic collection in the process - neat!]

I've had the game since launch, but wasn't *too* hardcore a player. Got a couple characters to end-game over the period of the past year (and that progress was mostly because I focused on co-op with a close friend which does help levelling). With the new Wastelanders update though I started a new character and am thoroughly enjoying it so far, particularly the refined new-player experience. It actually feels like a proper Bethesda FPS RPG now.

Surprisingly, the game seems to be VERY optimised lately. I'm not sure if that's new or a few updates ago, as I was awaiting Wastelanders for some months. However, for improving performance AND graphics, a little research with tweaking + ReShade goes a long way. There are also various QoL mods for Chat and other things that haven't yet made it into the main game but are expected to soon (e.g. Perk Loadouts) if that's your kind of thing; and the new NPC's have brought a much needed breath of life to the game. Voice acting is decent and has enough variety in personality, at least so far. Would love to see more added over time, though I expect that is very likely.

I have been very sceptical on whether the Creation engine could ever handle this game properly, but it seems to have turned out very well - after quite a rocky startup. I would consider the game now "out of early access", what with being vulnerable to Steam reviews - but it's a great time for platform expansion.

Currently mixed reviews..... that doesn't surprise me. Actually that's pretty typical of so-called "AAA" releases these days, it seems! So really, the game is quite subjective in whether it's good or not.

Top 3 Likes:
1) Great performance so far (since Wastelanders) on my 1070 Ti @ 1440p144 (G-sync) and absolutely beautiful on near-max quality, usually 60+ with minor hitching on complex events (new areas/spawns happening on the server). Well.... as long as you're comfortable tweaking the engine ini's and using a certain ReShade preset that gets rid of the petroleum jelly filter that has stayed in since like Skyrim.... [see Con for more info/fix]
2) Fantastic world-building, classic Bethesda visual story-telling and TBH the epitome of the Creation engine in regards to visual effects, performance and the "radial" system (the background simulation of environmental spawns/patrols/tactics/etc)
3) Now with fully voiced NPC's! Settlers vs Raiders too seems pretty cool, a basic reputation system is implemented. It can be pretty hardcore, too.... some random nutbag NPC with a pipe gun open fired on the side of the road, sicked his Rottweiler on me, and I chose to NOT run away xD

Top 3 Dislikes:
1) Why does the game *still* need INI tweaks + ReShade to look AND run SO MUCH BETTER? [See review comment for my Fallout76Custom.ini]. I get that it's lowest common denominator, but surely a dev can't test a better INI config generation process + get rid of that absurd blur, even it's it's just a LumaSharpen post-process filter (seriously; get ReShade + Alex's preset)
2) Fallout 1st is too expensive IMO, and has stuff I don't care about. Game is fine without any subscription though - I'm not a hoarder and don't desire isolation from other players.
3) Server performance can be bad at times. I haven't played the game enough since the new update to really tell yet (so far in Wastelanders it seems VERY good but i've been on unpopulated servers) which can get annoying. Although all interiors are instanced - some for single-player only (story/world-state interiors), they can still lag-out if there's a massive group event going on against a world boss. This is easily - though often inconveniently - avoiding by server hopping.

TL;DR:
All in all, I do think at this stage, Fallout 76 is a worthy game in the Fallout franchise. It really does satisfy that Bethesda FPS RPG itch and has become far more bug-free than any previous Creation engine game. Hopefully we get some official GECK release + custom server support soon, as once promised!

Not bad, even on my 1070 Ti. I just need to run at 720p, resolution scale 70, and global illumination on low - but I get constant 50-60 fps. It looks a bit smudgy, but back in the day we ran at 640x480 heh. Runs great and the effects are still awesome.

Turning off textures for a bit while playing also really illustrates the ray tracing, pretty cool! Different coloured lighting, ambient lighting and the reflections are fantastic.

Easy to recommend as long as you have a decent card, considering it's free.

Heard good things about this game but unfortunately it's buggy and seems abandoned by devs. I've tried to play this game on three different PC's over the years, the latest problem being the game will freeze then crash without warning. Nobody on the discussion forums, developers nor users, seems to care. Shame.

Can't recommend it, too risky for that price.

It's free (assuming you have O.G. Skyrim - if not then what's wrong with you); it's a first-person-narrative RPG - what's not to like? Still in the prologue but I love what they've done so far with the (controversial opinion warning) engine - a true testament to how great Creation can be. Sadly it's still using the 32-bit Creation though so has some minor issues, but that's completely understandable considering this game was in development for so long.

Be wary of the "better than Skyrim" comments (why do people insist on comparing things these days) - it's not really the same type of RPG. This is much more linear and story-driven than Skyrim. For you that might make it better, worse or just different. It feels like an old-school cRPG though, but not clunky and dated like Oblivion or older. Highly recommended - it's free after all (and better than most so-called AAA games these days)!

Best tank combat game ever, really. Can be well enjoyed without paying a cent (but if you like it as much as I did you will eventually start throwing money at it to collect 'em all, it's like a damn pokemon game)

I don't get it. How is this a famous franchise? I feel like it's an RPG with *kind-of-ok* combat (I mean it's no Dark Souls or Elder Scrolls but something trying to go in-between yet completely misses the mark), and it has practically zero story content nor any sense of adventure (despite it being on a tropical island or whatever with a flashy intro and talk of some prophecy or some such cliche JRPG plot device). I almost gave up very early during the tutorial, until I tried the gunlance which made fighting entertaining for a while, but that novelty wore off before long.

I just don't see how or why I'm supposed to be intellectually or emotionally invested in any area of this game at all. There's no point to any of why what's happening is happening or how the way things are came to be that way. Maybe I'm just too old and this kind of game is for the younger generation, I don't know.

The cat people are cute AF though.

EDIT: Comments disabled because of too much salt :\

Been wanting it for a while but was waiting for a sale.... saw it on sale today, wasn't sure but took a gamble....

BEST DEMOLITION DERBY GAME EVER.

Gotta play it right though! All assists off, manual transmission and realistic damage - so much fun. Career mode is cool so far too. You unlock more parts for your car as you go. Haven't tried multiplayer yet but there seems to be two populated servers right now with good ping for me (Australia). Damage and physics models are superb. Performance is good, just needed MEDIUM textures for my 4GB card (970 GTX).

Anyway, if you've ever really liked demolition derby games in the past this is totally worth it.

Gotten a bit bored with War Thunder lately, thought I'd finally give this a try. The game is much more casual than War Thunder (I was exclusively a Realistic Battles player) but that's not inherently a bad thing. It's more fast paced and has decent enough damage models, with modules and repair mechanics which can be cheaply repaired in-battle *but* also with HP which isn't as cheap to heal in-battle. I do like that it's set in the near-future in what might be considered a post-cyberpunk setting, the lore is interesting. I've not gotten to the stage where I can try the new story-driven season content but am looking forward to it.

I would really like it if they added a separate "hardcore" mode that removes the armor penetration indicator, though!

It's worth a try at least, it's free and there aren't many online vehiclar-combat games out there. This will probably be my go-to game for said genre at least until Crossout gets a significant update.

UPDATE: Originally a positive review, but the novelty and charm wore off. Wish I could rate this neutral but I cannot. The game is just WAY too easy. After doing some research, I found that this is a common consensus - it never gets challenging (apart from one dungeon thing at end game). I guess it's just too casual and not for me.

Original positive review below.

Not a bad solo-experience so far, really. It's like a hybrid of old-school JRPG and ARPG's like Diablo or Titan Quest (mind you, I'm playing as an archer with mouse + keyboard - it took a bit of customization and experimentation. Art is nice, music is decent, and it actually has a story (possibly a bit cliche as far as JRPG's go, but I don't mind it).

Recently got Monster Hunter: World but I've been too hooked on this! The strategy gameplay is quite similar to RimWorld where you have to micromanage jobs but it cranks resource management and automation up to 11. Absolutely love it. The amount of times my little guys have almost died from disease, CO2 buildup or starvation after I tapped a new coal vein without checking for germs, didn't pay attention to said coal emissions or ran out of power for my intricate oxygen ventilation system has given me a rollercoaster of an experience. If you like micromanagement strategy games I highly recommend it.
