I wouldn’t call that game a colony sim.
It's more of an overwhelming engineering problem that requires you to read wikis and watch YouTube videos to solve.

You won't be able to figure out how to avoid failing on your own without external help, unless you’re a very determined experimenter.

People call this a "trial and error" type of game and they say that "you have to figure it out".

However:
1) You will not "figure it out". You will have to resort to reading / watching guides.
2) Because of that, there is no true "trial and error" loop. At some point the game gets so difficult that you will stop learning anything from your mistakes. You will have to learn from somewhere else.

You won't be playing, you'll be studying.
People with engineering inclinations will love the challenge, but unfortunately, I think this game is not for me.
