Hollow Knight was by far the game I had the most fun with in 2017..

2017 was a huge year for video games. We got Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, etc., and the one game that really just stood out for me the most was Hollow Knight.

Hollow Knight is a metroidvania that sets the bar for any other developers who aim to make the same type of game, and damn does it set the bar high. In this 2D platformer, you fight your way through literally hundreds of unique enemies, as well as around two dozen unique bosses, in possibly the most beautiful and unique world I have seen in a video game for a while, accompanied by an incredibly enchanting soundtrack that sets Hallownest's mystifying atmosphere.

Everything about this game is good. Like, you'd imagine that if the small team of aussies managed so well on one aspect of the game, it may be lacking in an other aspect; but no, Team Cherry smashed this game, and the 2 free content packs (as well as a third one coming out later in April 2018) will simply shoot Hollow Knight further up in my list of favourite games. The combat: tight, fair, and makes you feel awesome when you do it right. The music: immersive, beautiful, and unique to the world. The environment: enchanting, mysterious, and captivating.
The story of this game is also fantastic, but in its own right. In Hollow Knight, you don't play during the climax of the world, but rather after it, walking through ruined environment, slowly learning more and more about the mysteries surronding the fallen kingdom of Hallownest, without being explicitly told anything, though you learn that you may just be the last effort to redeem the world.

I went into this game completely blind and after having dug 30 hours into it, I was just even more hooked into everything about Hollow Knight.

For those looking to buy...

Even after showing how much I actually loved this game, I have to admit that there are a few things that may drive people away from it. Know that, to those who wish to play this game, Hollow Knight is challenging but fair, and it will test you on everything it has to offer; and that, honestly, this game will be merciless if you don't attempt to go through it seriously. You should also know that this game isn't linear at all and that the map is huge. Everyone will have a different story to tell after finishing their initial playthrough, and those who prefer a more hand-held experience with explicit instructions might just have trouble getting through this game without a guide. Finally, this is a charming 2D platformer, but if you're into shooters and things with constant action, you might not believe this game can hold your attention.

Other than that, if you feel even slightly interested in this game, please do buy it. It's an absolute bargain, even at full price, for what you get.

If you do decide to buy Hollow Knight, I really do hope you'd get as much fun out of it as I did.
