If you liked Hyper Light Drifter and that kind of fast-paced 2D combat, this is an immediate purchase.

Cohesive, beautiful, thoughtfully designed game with a mix of combat and bite-sized puzzles. It feels like the devs built every part of the game with an extra layer to discover.

Brand new to the FZero/WipeOut genre of racers. I took a chance after I saw a streamer play Redout, and I'm loving every minute of it. The art style is delightfully simple. The frame rate seems very stable. The music is awesome and gives you a great rush when you're doing really well on a track.

Some feedback for the devs:

Personally, I would love a short tutorial on the mechanics. I played a bit of Mario Kart, so I was somewhat aware of strafing around turns, but with no visible feedback that my strafes were helpful, I wasn't sure (until I ran the same track a few times) that it was even doing anything. Maybe something that just runs through what each of the markings on the track mean as you go through a run, and some tips/tricks.

Currently, your powerups are bound to the X button with seemingly no way to change. This forces me to take my thumb off my right stick to activate them, which is a pain with ones like the Magnetic Grip that's useful to activate going into a turn. But what's strange is, the RB isn't being used by anything. Could the powerup button be swapped to the RB?

There are a few missing words and odd syntax/spellings, like the "Do You (sic) wish to" bit when you want to go back to the main menu. Not the end of the world by any means. Just something I noticed a couple times.

All in all, I was glad I dropped the $31.

Edit: Dodge Roll has addressed a lot of the complaints expressed here, and they're very active with the community, so I'd like to change this to recommended. I find myself playing Gungeon on Switch far more than any other title.

---

Gorgeous pixel art and animations hide an unbalanced, frustrating mess. You'll find yourself wondering why you just aren't playing The Binding of Isaac or Nuclear Throne, who handle their respective niches much better.

Gungeon appears to have taken the slow, strategic, and stingy rooms of Isaac and mashed them up with Nuclear Throne -- without tuning them for faster-paced combat requiring intense concentration. Each room feels like a slog to get through, and chances are, they won't reward you with anything for your efforts. The same is true for bosses: Encounters that should inspire the player to get better end up discouraging them, because the fights take far too long for the amount of concentration the player needs.

The lack of meaningful rewards, the difficulty of trash rooms, and the length and intensity of boss fights would each be fine on their own. However, Gungeon combines the three, as though that combination is how you make a game challenging. If one of these aspects were changed, Gungeon would be a great game. As it stands, though, it suffers from a startling lack of balance, and I find myself regretting the $15 more often than not.

Note: If you're using a keyboard and mouse, you'll have a much better experience if you go into Options > User Request Options and turn off Camera move interpolation and turn on V-sync. This removes the "floaty" feeling the camera normally has.

For the price, GOCCO OF WAR is absolutely a worthwhile purchase. Fans of Monster Hunter-style games will recognize familiar mechanics such as crafting, questing, and multiplayer lobbies, but the combat has a neat twist with the inclusion of the "Air" resource. "Air" will deplete with attacks or dodges and fill back up after a brief period of doing neither. It's pretty cool and never feels like it gets in your way, even when you run out of it. The game also has "badges" which seem to take the place of equipment buffs, allowing you to make a look without worrying about stats.

Pros:

  • The aesthetics are solid. The art is cohesive across the game and never feels out of place.
  • Lots of outfit choices for styling your character.
  • Dialog is very cute.
  • The user interface is fluid.
  • The devs seem super friendly and active.
  • They did a great job with multiplayer.

Cons:

  • Not a ton of content (quests, zones) compared to other hunting games. However, for the price, this is totally understandable, and the devs seem to be aware.
  • Not a lot of varying music as well. The music included is great, though.
  • Crafting is kind of confusing at first since you have multiple pouches, books, and items. It doesn't take too long to figure out, though, and it's much simpler than Monster Hunter's system.
  • From my brief time, there weren't a lot of folks playing multiplayer. This might be a time zone thing, so I'll keep looking.

All in all, if you're looking for a cute, fun grind, I'd say buy it -- especially since the more people playing online, the better!
