The primal vision of the continuous and the discrete was available to all in the night sky. The numberless scattered pinpoints of the stars were the discrete, the Milky Way the continuous. And the Milky Way contained other stars, because the continuous contains the discrete. That vision was man’s lingua franca. Whatever the latitude, they saw it, and pondered it.
