My husband said he'd given up hope, but here we are, 25 years later, playing his favorite childhood game together.

As the one who didn't play it back then, I was pleasantly surprised. It held up very well and was a fun time together. Perhaps best of all, I never had to tab away from the action to look something up; he knew all the tricks and tips.

So, if you're being asked for a nostalgia play, give it a try! I survived (and enjoyed) it, and so will you.

It's all right, but where's the rest of it? We only get 8 songs here, whereas there should be 34 (see here - https://vgmdb.net/album/143853).

What fun! 👻 I enjoyed the first Phantom Brave, and this one has a similar feel even if it's overall somewhat different. I think most of the changes are a good thing, and there's plenty to do if you like to take it slow and smell the roses along the way. 🌹

For a preposterous NIS story, it's not too bad, and the voice acting is generally good (though Apricot's crybaby whine gets old really fast). The gameplay is what really shines, and if you liked the first one, you'll like this one, too. Every map has a lot going on and plenty of strategy behind whom to bring out and where to put them, but it's also the kind of game where you can just over-level and ignore all that if you prefer.

👍 So the game gets a thumbs up from me... but there are some downsides.

First, the UI isn't great, and some of the information you need is simply missing or hard to get to. For example, would you like to know what skills you can learn without having to look through a dozen menus? You can't, and that's why I made a guide for it (and I shouldn't have had to). 🫠📊

Also, the only way to sort your stuff by item type is the sort "by ID" filter... but you can't use this sorting when you sell (???) so you might sell your last item of a certain type (which is important because you need them to learn skills). They have filters for the weapons, but then everything else is dumped in this huge "other" category. You'll have 6 swords and 500 "other." It's a huge missed opportunity. 🗡️❓🌳💯

Lastly, the game has some stability issues. Sometimes enemies won't stop bouncing, soft-locking you until the timer kicks in (and it doesn't always save you). 💣 I've also had about 10 crashes in my 100+ hours, most of them in the Dungeon. Be careful if you're using Mad Rat, Multi-Thrust, Omni-Spear, or Piercing Curse or your game might lock up during a dungeon run. The dungeons are quite fun and interesting (if you're a collector and/or a power leveler) so they need to be stable to be truly enjoyed! I've sent in my crash reports, so hopefully it will be patched soon.

This is the second DLC that gives you two characters and two maps, the other being Walnut and Castille. Like that one, I recommend this one as it's a good value. The story is preposterous for all of them (obviously!) but the characters are both good, and they have unique voices, too.

Sprout is a straight-up fighter (spec: Sword, Dagger, Hammer) who draws enemies and gets a stat boost with most melee weapons. Scarlet is a magic knight (spec: Sword, Dagger, Staff) who is also carrying a level 1 magic sword you can steal. It comes with all three elemental spells so it's a good way to level swords and spells at the same time.

As with the other DLCs, each character has a unique fusion with Marona, and the maps have items that scale to your level on it, so it's a good way to farm those items when you need them. These maps are snow maps, so you get lily of the valley flowers, snowy trees, and black rocks (which you need to upgrade your ship).

Finally, all DLC characters have the "Pirate" title that gives +19% to all stats except speed, which gets +12%, and +5 Steal. You can swap it out if you don't want it (or give it to someone else) once you get the Old Man NPC.

You may think this DLC has no point, and that's not strictly true. Having the outfits when you start the game means you can create a Sailor, Healer, and Chef right out the door without having to do the story maps to unlock them first. Now, I think the sailor is available right away, but the healer and especially the chef will take a little bit to unlock. Especially if you are like me and dither on every map or fuss with items, facilities, and DLC maps more than you go advance the story. 🙃

This guy is great, but the DLC scenario is kind of lame. It's not voiced, and there's only one scene. He is a strong fighter (spec: Sword, Dagger) and has abilities that make him stronger as the fight goes on and/or when lots of allies are around. He also has a slightly better steal rate, so I find myself using him all the time.

As with the other DLCs, this character has a unique fusion with Marona, and the map has items that scale to your level on it, so it's a good way to farm those items when you need them. This one is a pirate ship, so you can stock up on barrels and crates. It would have been nice if they'd put something in the water to get, too, but they didn't.

Finally, all DLC characters have the "Pirate" title that gives +19% to all stats except speed, which gets +12%, and +5 Steal. You can swap it out if you don't want it (or give it to someone else) once you get the Old Man NPC. You also unlock a unique music track by completing the scenario (accessible once you have a musician)

This DLC is just OK. It's not voiced, there's only one scene, and the character is interesting but they don't make the most of it. I thought they'd lean into the dual-nature of her, but Instead what you get is a pretty one-note strong fighter (spec: Sword, Dagger, Hammer) with quality passive buffs to attack and guard. If you like the idea of a princess on the front lines, go ahead and get her.

As with the other DLCs, this character has a unique fusion with Marona, and the map has items that scale to your level on it, so it's a good way to farm those items when you need them. This one has desert items on it, so it's an easy place to drop in for a cactus or dry grass on your level.

Finally, all DLC characters have the "Pirate" title that gives +19% to all stats except speed, which gets +12%, and +5 Steal. You can swap it out if you don't want it (or give it to someone else) once you get the Old Man NPC. This DLC didn't impress me. It's not voiced, there's only one scene, and the character is weird. She has abilities that improve non weapons, but doesn't have non-weapons as her specialty. Her spec is hammers and ranged. I recommend it for completionists only.

As with the other DLCs, this character has a unique fusion with Marona, and the map has items that scale to your level on it, so it's a good way to farm those items when you need them. This one has beach items on it, but so does the Castille and Walnut DLC, which is a better value.

I did this DLC last because I was sure I wouldn't use him. I was wrong. He's got a high steal rating and a chance to move twice, so I find myself pulling him out when I want to steal just one thing. Rat specializes in map items (the tree symbol) and lines up well with Bone items.

On the downside, rat and heart is just plain goofy, and there's only one scene. The story is of course preposterous.

As with the other DLCs, this character has a unique fusion with Marona, and the map has items that scale to your level on it, so it's a good way to farm those items when you need them. This one has jungle items (so you can get that red mushroom you need for a quest) and some rare syringes and an anchor I haven't seen yet in the early game.

Finally, all DLC characters have the "Pirate" title that gives +19% to all stats except speed, which gets +12%, and +5 Steal. You can swap it out if you don't want it (or give it to someone else) once you get the Old Man NPC. Of all the DLCs, I think this one's my favorite. Walnut (Spec: Sword, Dagger, Spear) makes a good fighter and Castille (Spec: Ranged, Hammer) a good gunner. For unique abilities, Castille is stronger when Marona is around and gets a move and jump boost. Walnut helps you make more money and also has a movement boost. He also has a slightly better steal rate, so I find myself using him even though he's a jerk.

It has two scenes instead of one, and as with the other DLCs, each map has items that scale to your level on it, so it's an easy way to farm those. This one has two maps with beach items.

Two more things. First, both of these characters can do a unique fusion with Marona. And second, they both have the "Pirate" title, which is +19% to all stats but speed, which gets +12%, and +5 Steal. You can swap it out if you don't want it (or give it to someone else) once you get the Old Man NPC. You also unlock a unique music track by completing the scenario (accessible once you have a musician)
