So I'm driving to the exit, panels falling off, 2 flat tires, 20% health, mere meters away from the exit, and I run out of gas. I panic and pour in my emergency gas into the tank and floor it; the car doesn't budge. Check engine light on maybe the engine is busted? Nope. Is the car in drive? Yup. Fill the tank a bit more, still won't move. Freaking out trying everything to get the car to move; screaming at the top of my lungs. 2% health as I lay there dying I realize all I had to do was turn the engine back on. I died in a No Second Chances zone... Cause of death, tardigrades.

I love this game.

tl;dr Yup, that's star trek alright. Couldn't be more star trek if it tried. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

First the actual game, you’ll understand why later.

Didn't expect much from a telltale inspired game when it comes to mechanics, so it really didn't detract from the experience. However, I am surprised the devs haven't learned ANYTHING about how to improve the gameplay since then. If they have, I think I get where they're at. They’re stuck in a "should we add all these new mechanics and risk making the game a lot harder" type of situation. They risk alienating people who just want a casual story and game with minimal input, but that's what options menus are for. I’m not sure how to make the more tedious minigames any more fun but, the stealth sections could easily be expanded on. Add new paths, alternate routes, more aware/threatening enemies, more distractions, sudden curveballs like enemies emerging from a doorway, disguises (we have that technology guys), and for Q’s sake stop making being detected an instant reset. Do something interesting, like turning it into a combat section instead. I’m not saying make MGS or Splinter Cell, but add a little more variety, and then just add a difficulty setting. I’m not dense, I know the devs have considered stuff like this early in development. I understand how time management, cost, experience, etc, factor into making a game, but come on TWD came out 12 years ago!

Same thing applies to “combat”.. This is what I mean when I say it has the bad of trek too. The combat is pretty faithful to the shows, too faithful. It consists of very silly peeking out of cover with phasers, nothing to protect yourself other than cover, and clicking a button to stun something. This is where they shoulda just said “nah we ain’t staying faithful to the shows” and gave us a true gun and armor. “But it’s a science vessel, they don’t need guns or heavy armor!” Counterpoint, VOYAGER. Counterpoint 2, Strange New Worlds. Like, we’re against the TKON EMPIRE FFS, the most powerful empire in universe as far as I’m aware. Unless you count the continuum, then second most powerful. Again, not asking for rainbow six vegas or something here, just more engaging combat.

(mostly spoiler free)

Fortunately, the bulk of the game consists of story and cutscenes, NOT gameplay. In short, they took an episode of TNG that was otherwise boring, and expanded upon it so much now that I’m personally taking it as canon. Whether or not it has long reaching implications in universe is entirely based on your decisions, in my save, they do. However, decisions are honestly pretty tame most of the game. You can’t really make many “bad” decisions in this game except maybe a few. It’s really not all that surprising since you’re an experienced first officer, not fresh outta the academy for half of the game. The only unfortunate side effect is that it’s still star trek, so I had the story figured out at the literal FIRST MAJOR DECISION you make. I also tried to make decisions based not on what I would have personally chosen all the time, but what I think the characters you play as would have chosen. There’s not much more to add without spoilers. It’s just good star trek.

As for the graphics and world, they’re good where it matters, bad where it doesn’t. They nailed, and I mean nailed perfectly the world of trek. It looks, no, bleeds trek in its visuals and set design, even if some of the assets look store bought. This was either created by huge fans of trek, or by people who did a LOOOOOT of research. My only gripe is those awful animations. I know animating is really really hard; I used to do it as a hobby and gave up. For most of the game, it’s not bad enough to pull you out of the story, except maybe those cover roll animations. Lol, lmao even on those. But for a game that’s mostly cutscenes and story, I expected a bit better than what we got.

Idk, it’s just good trek. Less like TNG with its insanely high highs, and borderline falling asleep lows. More like voyager, consistently good, but with no true peaks or dips. Yeah I just had to throw that in there, I prefer voyager for that reason. Don’t fight me on that, you won’t win. Ego stroking aside, this is just a good trek game. The bar wasn’t that high to begin with, but I won’t let that detract from the passion that was put into this game. And for 12$? Hey, that ain’t too bad!

Hearts of stone level content for blood and wine pricetag.
This is nowhere near as much as CDPR is capable of, and nowhere near the scope of blood and wine.

That being said,
-The story is engaging
-The character performances are superb
-Johnny isn't written like a complete idiot (most of the time)
-Iconic weapons and cyberware are meaningful upgrades (and fun)
-Dogtown's industrial dystopian look fits very well with the main story and theme
-Level design is top notch most of the time

What's here is some high quality stuff, but there's just not nearly enough of it to justify 30$.

Pros:
-Money sink

Cons:
-Literally just a money sink

40k groschen to make a few thousands a day
OR
Just keep the 40k and buy literally everything in the game

This needed way more gameplay function than being just a money sink.
