Write your own post asking for advice, encouragement, sympathy, or anything else. Or respond to others' letters returning the sentiment in kind. You can also "broadcast" a paper airplane to others playing at the same time. This can be a fun way to quick share with others, but its use often devolves into, in my opinion, annoying "chains" of paper airplanes with users posting the previously shared country and then their own or sometimes simply counting numbers.

It can be emotionally burdening but ultimately really rewarding. Plus, there is no pressure to answer every letter so skipping until finding one that resonates with you can prevent some of that burden.

The only traditional game mechanic is collecting a limited number of stickers and room decorations. This is mainly accomplished by getting a thanks from someone after responding to their letter. Collecting these things is clearly not the focus of the game and it seems the developers included them for fun rather than as a driving force to engage with others.

Overall, it's a really great idea and I've been pleasantly surprised with the wholesomeness of the community. I definitely recommend this game if you think you might like making empathetic (although perhaps fleeting) connections with strangers.
