I've been a long time fan of Bethesda Game Studios. And it pains me to see the downward trajectory they've been on since Skyrim released. Each new release from them feels like it gets dumbed down and loses more and more character and charm. Sure, by today's standards their older titles don't match up in a lot of aspects, but they had a special feeling about them that made you not want to put them down.

Starfield is the pinnacle of this downward trajectory in my opinion. It lacks substance in every aspect. Your choice of weapons, armor, and equipment feel meaningless. The perk system is atrocious and horribly designed. The writing is some of the worst I've ever seen. Exploration is pointless. The universe feel completely empty. I could go on for days. The only thing I really enjoyed was building ships, and that got boring very fast when you realize you almost never get to use your ship for anything other than initiating one load screen after another to get from point A to point B.

It feels almost like you're in a crappy sci-fi version of West World where the entire universe is a half done theme park built around making you feel important (and failing to) and is populated with androids that lack any humanistic character.

Don't waste your money.

I don't normally review games (I think this is like my second review in 13 years of being on steam), so take that fact alone as testament to how good this game is. Super fun and addicting. Simple concept with outstanding execution even in EA. Upgrades are fun and well thought out, and the core game loop is great. If you want a game to enjoy with friends (or solo, but multiplayer is great) that has some hilarious, fast paced, ridiculously fun game play, this is it.

I've had this on my wish list for a while now, waiting for it to go on sale, and now that I've finally pulled the trigger and bought it, I'm wishing I would have done so a LONG time ago. This is one of the best games I've played in a long time. It's challenging on the normal difficulty, but not overly punishing. It makes you think hard about decisions and how to manage your resources. Overall, an extremely fun game that I highly recommend.
